Future purchase...struggling between TE or SR5

The internet is a great place to glean information ... if one can seperate the "wheat from the chaff." And the ratio of "wheat to chaff" here is comparable to other sites I've participated on. In other words, I consider all the info on an internet forum suspect.

I'll ask questions from time to time, but I don't consider the answers "gospel" until I've corroborated it myself.

Example of a normal question:
Clueless: "What is that sensor located under the carpet in the cargo area?"
Answer1: "Security system sensor"
Answer2: "Keyless remote receiver."

You consider all information suspect so you go check it out. I will tell you that you won't find the answer anywhere else but here unless you went and spend $$$$ on manuals and know how to read them. So now what are you going to do? Of course you will come here and try to figure it out right? During that time you will also try to consider the source of the answer too! Harper posted the answer to that question a few years ago. He has a few thousand posts and he also posted pictures of the keyless remote receiver. The new guy posted no pictures and he thinks it has something to do with the security system because his old Jeep had something like that.

That's what I was trying to get across. Consider the source. Nothing else.

The little girl in the photo is a Field bred English Setter ... my "pocket rocket.." 31 lbs at 1 year old. Got her out of a friend's kennel where she was very unhappy! Very well bred, out of Ultimate Reissue x Clark's Sandy Beach. Someone tried to finish her too fast, and basically ruined her .. never pointed a bird in her life, but I gave her every opportunity, and she spent many an hour running the big woods. Anyway, she'll be 12 years old in July, and had a great life here .. She made us very happy.

We had Field Gordons for almost forty years, and still have one, but she's getting up in years also, so that's where the "BlacknTan" comes from.

I've got a fair amount of arthritis .. so I don't know what my next dog will be.. can't run down misbehaving "outlaws" anymore!

Had alot of gundogs .. Some great, some just good, and some knuckleheads, but they all found a way into my heart ...

That's a great story. I'm glad you shared that. It reminds me of hunting birds with my Dad and the English Setter (I hope I got that right Dad) we had when I was a teenager. I now have 3 cats I can't catch unless I carry treats.

I'm not looking for an argument with you or anyone else here. We all have the right to our own opinion, and I often consider "facts" to be, often quite elusive. One man's "fact" is often another's "fiction..." but, that's just what I've gleaned from livin' a long time. I was a blue collar guy, no diplomas hanging behind my desk.

Anyway, I still believe that the only silly question is the one that goes unasked. No one forces anyone to hit the reply button, so I can't for the life of me understand the attitudes of some folks here, but as I said, I've been around enthusiast forums for awhile, and learned all about the "pecking order."

All that is OK by me, as long as the guy givin' the s*it-eatin answer looks more foolish than the new guy with the newbie question. But, as I said, it's a symptom of the anonymity of the "innanat..."

You forgot answer #3, the typical response we often get here.
Answer3: Sex Light Indicator (SLI). It triggers the overhead strobe light when you're having a really good time in the back of your T4R. It comes standard on the LE.

If the job is in limbo then consider paying cash for the car. That's what I learned from the recession. I don't want car payments.

Maybe it's just me not seeing the drive options in the electronic dial but it looks like the SR5 drive modes do not include a 2 wheel high, which is better for highway and city fuel efficiency. The Trail lever knob is much more obvious and intuitive for me.

If you plan to add rock sliders then the Trail Edition is much easier. You won't need to remove that low hanging trim. And look close at the SR5 and Limited body trim at the front and back bumpers. I think they hang lower on both than the Trail.

The locking differential is a big deal, IMO. I am replacing my very capable 1995 Jeep GC with a Trail Edition. Mostly because it's time to replace the car. The Trail has a locking rear diff', something I have missed in the Jeep a few times.

KDSS is nice. I've driven both with and without it and the KDSS is much better on the road. I just ordered my Trail Edition with KDSS and haven't driven them enough to know how they do off-road with the KDSS.

Ha ha, my mistake. "My friends all drive Porsches. ..." Janis Joplin was too stoned to spell it right. And if you remember the '60s you weren't there either. I have no excuse.

My patio does have a few plastic chairs. don't try sliding backwards in them in soft dirt or around paver stones. They will collapse. I know. :scared:

I don't think calling somebody an idiot and dummy is a good way to get across your point that one would be better off putting the $40K into a CD and financing the vehicle and making money in the long run.

I currently have an 02 SR5 that I take out to easy/mild trails here in CO. I am looking to purchase a new 2015 in the next month or two once job stuff settles.

I would prefer the TE without KDSS, but it seems that is a rare option in this area. I did see TEPs without KDSS, but they take too much headroom from me and I don't like softex....prefer cloth and the coverking seat covers.

As a result, I am thinking about an SR5 but don't really want to settle if I don't have to. I am planning on future trips to Moab and thought the locking rear would be helpful, but didn't know if it would really make that much of a difference for me. My main upgrad s in either case may be the toytec boss lift, sliders, and TRD rims with Duratracs.

soooo... I'm not sure what keys are supposed to look like now. But I am definitely curious!

Are you waiting for a 2016 or a 6th gen just to get a different style key? Not judging, just curious as to how big an issue this is to other people. We are looking at a new car for my wife and while seat and mirror memory are important to us I never thought about key design or that their were that many different key styles.

I've met more than a few people in the last 8 years who got laid off during the Great Recession but still had a $500+ car payment. Doesn't matter how much you've paid off. If you can't make the payments you will lose the car.

I've learned that if the job is in limbo then consider paying cash for the car.

If I had something that paid more than 2% return on investment, I'd put the money there. But most people don't. We own our 100 year old Craftsman home and are slowly restoring it. It takes a lot of work, not money. The $30,000 I could finance at 2.9% (not 1%) will not buy me another fixer-upper rental to invest in.

But to each his or her own. You're kind of thinking is what's fueling the American economy. 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending. Only Greece has a higher percentage of consumer spending compared to GDP. And look where it got them. What you can't afford you can always charge and hope to pay it off later. People have been using their homes like piggy banks, taking out lines of credit to buy luxury goods and non-essentials. Then when the housing bubble burst they found themselves underwater and couldn't sell their homes if they wanted to. If you can afford to buy it, save up the money and pay cash instead. You'll like the feeling it gives you.

I'm replacing my 20 year old Jeep because it is starting to get hard to find parts for it. I need to replace it or it will end up costing me a lot more. A few months ago I spent $500 trying to replace a $35 head panel. You know the part, that big thin plastic panel behind the grill that holds the headlights, bumper, fenders and grill onto the frame. Everything in front bolts through it. Buying a new car will cost me more than keeping the old one. It almost always does. If I can afford to pay cash for it by saving for a while, then I can afford that new car smell.

And FWIW you may not be better putting the $ in the market. Low risk and risk free investments are significantly below car loan rates. Investing in a current market at a Q ratio of 1.1 could be considered foolish as well.

It really is hard to believe Toyota hasn't updated this yet. It's almost unforgivable that the headlights aren't automatic. The 4runner slots between the Base model and SE model Yaris for technology. I didn't check and just assumed when I bought it they would be. My 90's cheap chevy trucks have auto headlights. Couldn't figure out why my navigation wasn't changing screens until I realized that it doesn't have auto headlights.

I was thinking about waiting for the 2016's (assume minor tweaks like color) or the new 2017. As it is unclear whether the 2017 will be that much better or increase in size which I don't like, I might as well jump into a 2015. I am happy with end of year models as I still have my 2002 4Runner and 2006 Tundra.

That's a $400 key. Try replacing one. And it requires a battery.

My 1995 Jeep has an push button door open fob that separates from the key. I put it away and never used it. It's still in the glove box. It also has automatic headlights. I hate how they come on when you drive into a short tunnel. Some of the luxury SUV's have auto open tailgates. They cost at least $10k more and won't go off-road like a T4R can.

I like the T4R, and the Jeep Wrangler, because they are simpler cars with less electronics to go haywire on me when I'm out on a dirt road 40 miles from anywhere. Ask an Jeep Grand Cherokee owner how they like all those fancy systems that Jeep can't seem to keep running.
