does anyone know if its possible to download the whole USA on Gaia for offline use. If anyone is familiar with maps.me app. This app allows you to download state to state or the whole USA map for offline use, which is awesome. However its not as detailed as Gaia.

I don't understand why anyone would want a subscription navigation service. If I buy a topographic map book, it's mine to use for as long as I want without paying an additional fee every month. I see no reason why a digital version should be any different.

question for you who run Gaia.

If I use a iPad in my runner, using Gaia GPS and it is linked to my iPhone using it as a hotspot, will it update just as it does on my phone. Taking a overlanding trip in a few weeks and don't know if I want to spend $200 on a ram mount setup to use the iPad.

Yep, I do this often with my old WiFi only iPad mini.

I tried this today while driving and it did not show mph or elevation up on top. when I tap on record it warns me Gaia has not found a set location yet, reason my device has no gps. I have an iphone 7 on hotspot and a wifi only ipad air. what am I missing?
My older gen1 Ipad has gps, I may just use that one for tracking with cracked screen and all.
When I figure this out, I'll try the paid subscription.

this has multiple map books from multiple sources, and unlike a map book allows you to plan and switch between backgrounds and then you can sync that route to any of your devices or share the route. also unlike a map book you can see routes, photos, and waypoints that other people have shared.

i still use and prefer map books for high level general direction planning, but for trail level and saving waypoints and stuff gaia is much better than map books

i just checked and it let me zoom out to have the whole country at map level 10 . at higher map levels it was in red, not sure if that was a warning for file size or if it wouldn't have let me download. I think a 1:24,000 USGS map is close to the gaia zoom level 15. I would ask them, they have active tech support: https://www.reddit.com/r/gaiagps

Makes sense. Thank you. Would I need a certain type of bluetooth to run it?..I paired the ipad to a Garmin Nuvi bluetooth and could not get it to work. Any recommendations on a receiver? I was looking at the bad elf for a receiver.

I have the Dual GPS but I'm on Android so I can't say how well it works on iOS

Garmin Nuvi isn't a bluetooth GPS device, Garmin GLO is the product you would need if you like Garmin

Shoot, I forgot that old Mini has a GPS chip. I've never had service turned on but it came with a Verizon setup giving it GPS. Sorry if I steered anyone wrong.

So I got steered wrong by watching some of the overlanding videos out there. Originally got the idea from a gent named Chris (who does great videos) when he did a rundown on his setup using GaiaGPS.

Was under the impression you could simply pair a Garmin GPSmap 64s (for instance, the device I have) and an iOS device then GPS data would be passed to the device and subsequently GaiaGPS app.

Not the case to my dismay.

The Garmin connect app is a joke for GPS applications unless notifications are important to you while in the woods...

After all I'm using an iPad 6 with a Bad Elf dongle and a Cable Jive docking adapter to connect the two because the dongle will not connect to your Apple device with any kind of case on it. The CableJive product is the only adapter I know of that will work for this application and it is an excellent product.

Can highly recommend both the Bad Elf and CableJive products. Love the GaiaGPS product, it's just fantastic and will invariably upgrade to Premium at some point but even the basic subscription is phenomenal for the price.

Now if RAM could just get around to manufacturing a few pieces so I could mount them in my car? Order RAM parts you desire 3 months before you need them, another lesson I learned lately...
