What is a good budget friendly tablet for running Gaia GPS? I bought a Galaxy Tab A off of amazon for $100. It just seems unresponsive and slow with offline maps loading. I am planning on sending it back. Any other suggestions? Id say I would like to keep my budget under $300. Preferably under $200.

You may want to put-up with the "slowness" of your tablet because the only other alternatives are more $. It has a good GPS in it. Even my new ipad 6 takes a bit of time to fill maps depending on what I'm looking at. It's not like we're flying jet fighters in fog and need telemetry RIGHT NOW!?

I'm no Apple fanboy but I can only recommend iPads for stuff like this now but that doesn't hep you. For instance my BlackVue Android app does all kinds of weird things, the app on my iPad just works...

Its more than just slowness. Its more of I have it zoomed in on a map I have downloaded and I slowly drag the screen and after a very short distance the screen goes to a grid pattern like it is loading and it is like that for 10 or 15 seconds before it starts filling in again. The whole screen does this not just the areas that have yet to load. And this is with wi-fi off. Im just trying to find something a little better than that for running. I don't mine it taking a while to load but my phone outperforms this and Im using a iphone 5s and it is a slow phone due to age.

I use an old asus zenpad 8, I think I paid about $120 , but I still prefer my paper maps for high level general direction type route planning

I use Gia and grab the GPS via a Garmin GLO mounted on the dash and pair it with an Ipad Mini.
As long as I download all the maps of where I'm headed before hand at home over the wifi it works like a charm.

At first I had an Asus tablet (cheap one), then a Galaxy Tab (more expensive upgrade from the Asus), and then finally to the Ipad Mini.
The reasons for the upgrade is that I found the Android versions ran slower when to came to loading data, especially multi layer maps, when scrolling through them and moving the map around searching for points of interest and new trails.

I can also run it on my iPhone X no problem if needed even though it has a smaller screen it still works great.

I don't understand why anyone would want a subscription navigation service. If I buy a topographic map book, it's mine to use for as long as I want without paying an additional fee every month. I see no reason why a digital version should be any different.

The physical maps are great, no doubt. The sub service for this is for convenience and instant access to all maps globally via the service and areas they support with coverage. It's only about $30 a year and based on all info you get and ease of trail use, it's worth it for some folks. The added benefit of custom trail creation, way-points and trip recorder are an additional benefit which I use extensively. Since it syncs with the Gia account server all my trail info is stored to the server allowing for me to share and view it online on my pc anytime and it's super easy to create gpx exports to share trail trips with folks on the forums or friends online.

I realized the android version of the app is also not up to par with the apple version. So I think I am going to get an iPad. Ive narrowed down to an ipad mini 4 and the current generation ipad both with cellular (i dont what to have to deal with extra accessories). Both come out just over $500. Which would be better? the mini is smaller and can probably be used on my magnetic phone mount but the ipad (6th gen I think) has a more powerful processor?

Given price, specs and features, the only reason I can see to get a Mini is if you absolutely need/want a tiny tablet and that is not a reason to me. Unless you need a small device to fit somewhere or something(?), getting the 9.7 is a no-brainer. RAM-HOL-TABL20U and RAM-B-202U are what you'll need to hold it with a 1" ball set-up.

Apologies, I should have added we already had the iPad mini and it wasn't being used much so I "reallocated" it to the 4runner for this use.
If I was going to spend the $$ I agree with J.F. and would have looked into getting a normal sized one to see if it would fit my needs, but the mini works great.

It's not like you have to get a new machine either with lots of refurb units and "used" units for sale out there for good prices? You can get in on something like this if you want to look around a bit and are patient?
