Game of, what’s that noise?

Developed this noise under hood. Sounds like a box of rocks. Loosened the tensioner on the serp belt thinking if it was bearings in any accessory items you’d know quick. The AC conpressor and alternator both had no play or noise. It’s definitely coming from the right hand side and doesn’t seem like engine noise but one of the ACC items on the serpentine belt or the idler rollers. I haven’t heard or seen anyone having issues with these items and I’m at 36k. Truck is currently in another state so nothing I can do about it now, when I fly back it’s gonna go to s shop but I’d like to try and figure some ideas why I’m anxiously waiting to go back.

Any chance the fan blades are hitting the plastic shroud or rubbing against something else? Hard to hear in my phone tho.... have you looked at it in person?

that sounds like the timing belt timing whipping around bad belt tensioner or water pump pulley but you only have 36k miles so that wold be a surprise. when you checked the pulleys did you test for in out play and put pressure on the pulleys and feel for a wobble.

Don’t think so. I drove 600 miles with the noise... didn’t have much of a choice. Stressed the whole time.

Is the idler rollers or tensioner bearings dying a thing for these? I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone have that issue..especially at 37k miles.

It has a timing chain, so I don't think that's it.

No timing belt on the 5th gen. Its a chain.

Definitely not the timing chain. I'm fairly confident its one of the idler rollers, tensioner roller, Alternator or AC compressor. I'm just really surprised whatever it is at 37k miles I woulnd't expect any sorts of noises. Anxious to get back to Denver get the truck and get it to a shop and hope its a quick fix so we can get into our 3 week Utah and CO camping trip...

Weird. Glad you made it through the long trip! Strange noise. Could ask a million questions but it seems like that ought to be fairly easy to pinpoint since it isn’t something that’s intermittent. Those intermittent noises are the ones that drive you crazy. Good luck with it!

So ASSUMING its something on the serp belt (tensionor, idler, or Alt or AC) the only one i didnt spin was the tensioner. Can you remove the serp belt and run the engine? I know it passes the waterpump so wasn't sure if it was ok to run without the belt. That would narrow it down immediately to that belt system if the noise is gone. Then on that note as well ASSSUMING its one of those items are the rollers and serp items things a dealership keeps in stock or is this a order the parts and wait for them to come in?

If it were the bearing in the idler pulley, it would be screaming, not ticking. Also, you could remove the belt and feel if the pulley were loose.

Fair enough, sounds so much like little ball bearings spinning around clacking into each other, i do however like the idea that its the fan shroud....that would be amazing.

What are the chances there’s a small rock just sitting there rattling away doing it’s best to annoy you? You might be able to use a stethoscope to help pin point noise a little better

Its WAY to consistent to be a rock somewhere. Its also an interesting consistent pattern at idle but changes in to steady and sync with RPM's. i used a screwdriver as a "stethascope" it certainly did not appear to be coming from the top end of the enginer or alternator. That was about all I could reach.

Did you pop the serpentine belt off and run it yet? That’ll rule in / out a lot of things quickly IMO.

I loosened it and hand spun things. My question was can it be removed and run. I know it goes around the waterpump but wasn't sure if its running the waterpump and if it was good to run with the serp belt.
