Garmin 2620 v.s Magellin 700

Considering a portable GPS for the runner. I am going to go portable so it can be used in my wifes van also. Does anyone has insight as to which is better and why. Both appear to have the same features and pre-loaded maps. I do like the Garmins beanbag base, but right now the Magellins price is pretty good at Costco. Thanks in advance for input.

I always thought the Garmin was a better unit, but when I read a comparison of the two units, they actually favored the Magellan by a small margin.

The article was in Car and Driver or possibly Motor Trend a few months ago. You might be able to find it on their website if you feel like searching for it.

I went thru the same research between the Garmin and the Magellan. Ultimately I couldn't justify the cost. While researching those two units, I read about a Garmin system that runs on a laptop computer. I forget the exact price-- between $125 and $150 Dollars-- I bought the Garmin GPS 18 system, which includes the GPS 18 antenna and the laptop sw. For my requirements it was a great solution. The laptop display gets washed out a bit, but because I have the AC outlet in the 4Runner I can keep the laptop charged. It has the voice commands so I can either leave the laptop on the passenger seat or on the back seat and listen. I recently took a vacation and did 1100 miles in FL. It was great. Because I had a passenger they really played with the all of the GPS features-- I just "followed the directions." A couple of things to consider-- I have the AC outlet, which really makes a difference and a passenger is really the best person to handle the GPS system. Microsoft has a similar set up, but that system doesn't have the voice commands.

you can find a magellan online cheaper than costco...

Costco is 999.00 right now i believe..

if you go here www.compuplus.com and look it up under GPS and then magellan, you can get it for $909.

I got it over the summer through a guy at work, and it's awesome. Very precise.

I'm actually thinking about selling mine, as i hardly use it. I know my way around a little too well. hahah

I've had my 2610 for over 1yr. i love it. can't be easier to use. Friend has the Mag700, also good.
Consider buying the 2610 and a larger CF. I can store almost everything west of the MISS on a 512MB card. The remote on the garmin is really useful. I mainly use it, and leave the GPS on the dash.

I bought a Navman ICN510 ($349 from Fry's and that included a 256 MB SD card).

It's got a 300 Mhz cpu and the reroute is extremely fast (usually about 10-15 seconds after I miss a turn). It's light and has a built-in Lithium battery that I can carry with me while walking too.

Garmin GS815

I bought a Garmin GS815 last year and love it. It's a tad pricey but it has an easy to read display and the auto Nav Kit gives you the maps and the means to mount and power it in your car.

The big reason why I decided on this unit instead of a dedicated auto nav unit was because it is flexible. I can take it anywhere I go, whether it is hiking, biking, or whatever.

The screen is easy to read and with the maps installed on it, I have found it pretty good at routing me where I need to go.

The only downsides I have found with the GS815 is that finding a destination isn't really something you want to try on the road. Another consideration is that the unit has 115MB of built in RAM - I have found I can store an impressive selection of maps in that, but if you're living in a densely populated area, it would limit your total area.

For added amusement, take one on board a jet next time you have to fly somewhere. Odd seeing current speed indicating 400+ MPH!
