gas can and moutning options?

I plan to head out to gorman, ca later this month to the hungry valley svra. My lift kit and tires have been ordered but I have yet to order a roof rack because I'm a little cautious about clearance issues to my apartment building and work parking lots. Are there some other options to mounting gas cans aside from the roof rack? I've seen some trucks with jerry cans mouted to the rear, I'm more interested in those. I've had a hitch storage rack before on my old taco and I'd rather not have one of those for risk of scraping while whomping.

Something that wont risk much clearance and is low profile that isn't roof mounted.

I think that unless you have a custom rear bumper, your only options would be a hitch mout or roof rack mount. But I'm a noob, so someone else may be aware of something out there for you.

I know this is a big no no. Earlier this year I went on a 5 night Death Vally trip and I put my new scepter jerry can in the cargo area.

I did not have any smelling fumes, leaks, etc. Very impressed with the scepters.

This was the only time I did that, and now I am looking for a rear bumper with swing out.

Depending on which Scepter, the "NATIO MFC/military fuel can" do not vent, hence even if you put it in your cargo area, there isn't really any ill effect.

People have used the large rotopax mount with the factory crossbars. You either drill them or fab up a simple mount.

Either hitch storage, (There is one which holds a spare tire + gas cans) or on the roof using a yakima/thule basket the mount on the roof rails, just remove them before you enter the garage.

Do you know what the height limit of your garage? I've gone through a 6'-11" garage with a Gobi Stealth, and OME Lift (3"), and 275/75 tires. If you go with a Flat Utility Baja Rack it'll be about the same height as the stock rails.

Do you already have the cans? If so, what kind are they? You may be able to find a mount that will clamp directly to your cross bars if you don't have a cargo basket.

i haven't gotten the cans yet and there's no rack. i just have some crossbars on there that i got in a jiffy for my snowboard rack. my apartment entry is 6'4 and i'm fairly confident that i can squeeze through with 2.5/2 and 285s. if there's a rack that can sit at the same height as my crossbars then that'd be amazing.
