sry... ok so back on topic. Ive noticed that a clean air filter actually gets me less mileage then when it is dirty but ive been getting 270 miles and im doubting the oil would make a difference.
Gas milage after 3" lift and tires?

Haha, true. I have all stock still and I get about 300 miles a tank without running to empty. (usually about 16.5/18.5 gallons used.)
I'm thinking about lifting this summer and I too would like to know the mpg difference but my guess if the tires aren't too crazy, the change in mpg won't be either.

haha that seems like an unlikely candidate for the better gas mileage. Sure you weren't driving a little more aggressively? :driving: haha

ya bc i did this a while back and noticed everytime i clean the air filter (sprayed with air compressor or replaced by new one) that my gas mileage would go down and once it was used for about 5000 miles it started to get me better gas mileage. MY aggressive driving has actually been about the same or a bit more but hopefully ill get to verify on my next tank... it was just something i wanted to mention though i didnt wanna use it as a fact since ive only gone through one tank... Ill update once i get at least two-three more tanks in.

Its all good, I'm surprised at how many responses I got already. I've got to get the 4runner first, then I guess I can worry about lift and tires. Looks like most guys run 265/75's? Will those fit on a stock height runner?

Depends on the year of the 4runner... I went to SAMs to buy my stock tires like 2 years ago and they said i wouldnt be able to fit them since my 02 sport 4runner was lower and had a brush guard on the front so id rub though my friend's 98 limited was able to.

Most stock people run a ~32" tire and most lifted people run a ~33" tire.

I only get around 200-220miles.
A little background info though...
I just brought the car up to Ontario from California this past December and we really haven't seen too much snow here so that's not a problem. I've got 265/70/16's on and I'm fairly certain its's stock height. I don't have a heavy foot but I probably drive 40/60 city/hwy.
Are you guys putting in premium fuel? I use the lowest because I was told that it wouldn't affect it but damn you guys are getting an extra 100 miles out of your tank for some reason. Also is 300 after the gas light has come on for a long while? Or do you actually drive 300 miles before the light comes on...

when mine was stock id drive 300+ before the light turned on and i typically pour the middle fuel 3 times and on the 4th time i pour the premium. I learned this habit from my parents when they gave me the car or i wasnt allowed to have the 4runner and well it has been working great and i cant complain when i se wat some of the guys on here are getting.

Why do people with low compression engines use "premium" fuel? You do realize that it's a HUGE misnomer to call it premium, right? Octane is octane, it has nothing to do with quality. I can't believe this is still a topic that comes up month after month...
Use 87, as the manufacturer recommends.
Also, talking about miles-per-tank, or miles-before-the-light-comes-on is completely meaningless. Lights come on at different times on all 4runners. The only way to compare is miles per gallon filled.

YA i know wat u mean but since he asked i thought id just answer the question. I know that the "premium" isnt really different other than octane... Ok well if u wanna get all specific and talk about how many gallons filled then i typically fill 16.5

Does the tank size change from year to year in 4runners? Mine only holds about 14.5 gallons per fill up. I fill up when the light comes on and the needle is right at empty. Not sure if my light is coming on early or not...
No complaints though I am getting close to 300 miles between fill ups which is about 20 miles a galloon.

ya the light comes on early and depending upon he year model, there are slight changes in when it illuminates.

Sams is wrong. Regardless of the year, at full stuff the tire is at the same position. Even at full stuff, 265/75/16s won't rub, and if they do, it will be very minimal. I don't see the brush guard being in such a position that the tires would hit it, if so, adjust accordingly :flamethrwoer2:
I think a lot of people forget to correct for the difference in tire size. I went from 265/70/16 getting around 300 miles per tank on the highway to 285/75/17, heavy Toyo MT's, getting a corrected 240-260 miles per tank on the highway. This is also only at around 13 gallons of gas. If you drive with a lead foot then it'll be less, but doesn't have to be.

I get between 15-16 mpg with mixed driving, I never drive just city so I can't say on that but with basically just highway I can squeeze 17-18. BTW that's with a 3in lift and 33s with maybe 100lbs of gear. But to be honest that's almost exactly the same as when I had a 2in lift and 32s.

There is a huge difference in MPG depending on area in the country, hills, stop lights, altitude, etc.
I did a cross country trip last year and noticed huge differences in various different areas. This is about 98% highway miles.

My best tank was 21.47mpg that was leaving Bend Oregon headed towards Yellowstone""
I have a 3" lift and running 255/75R17 tires and averaged 19.8mpg on the trip while hauling 800#s of camping gear, fire wood, 2 giant coolers full of ice and food/drinks, spare water, clothes, etc.
The rear cargo from the back of the front seats to the rear door, floor to roof and side to side was packed solid.
