gas milage seems really bad at 12 mpg anyone else?

2016 trail version. tires are 285/70r17 but didn't need any fender mods. no roof top tent, i do have a plano box up there. looking at my recent mpg and it says 12 mpg!!!

noticed this on a approx imate 200 mile trip. mostly highway and graded dirt. never went over 75 mph on highway. one 20 mile barely technical section. just don't get it. i need to get at least 15 mpg to consider keeping this pig.

what sort of long term gas milage are folks getting.

to be clear, the computer shows a 12.9 mpg over 28,000 miles.

i do tend to put the cruise on 75. when i pass, i get up to 85, then slow down again.

I got about 19-20 on my last trip to LA going 75, but I also had stock tires and didn’t make the brick shape even brickier with a box on top.

I've had my '16 Trail Premium for 30k miles and regularly get 19 to 23 at Interstate speeds of 70+. And I have a heavy foot when it comes to accelerating and downshifts using the pedal.

Heck, I can get 20 on some 50-mile trips on relatively flat 4-lane west of Richmond when I'm pulling my 1500-pound boat and hauling 2 200-pounders and seats, tackle bags, a cooler, and recovery gear - compressor, strap, MaxTrax, etc. A lot of the places we fish only have muddy banks, no ramp.

A box on top seems to be a killer. I don't know about oversized tires because I don't need them.

That is strange. I have a Baja rack with recovery gear ( High-Lift, Angry Beaver Shovel, and Axe) and a 34" spare on top. SSO bumper with Stage 2, 34's and sliders and I get 283 miles to a tank and I run 70-75 all day on the highway.

I'm averaging 21.7 on my completely stock 2019 TRDOR with about 23k miles. It seems that mods kill mpg on these rigs, with tire upsizing being the first and worst.

I usually get 17-18 on city type streets and highways and 22-23 on flat open highways

Agree with 1 other that box on top and other mods will not help

My rig has a few goodies on it like 285s, sliders, slimline with stage 2 and a winch, roof rack and a lift and I will do 300 miles out of a tank of gas then the light goes on

Mods definitely kill fuel economy.
I was getting 21.4 highway on my stock 2019 TRD OR. Going from factory highway tires to stock size Falken Wildpeak AT tires dropped the mpg to 20.7 mpg. The roof rack dropped it to 20.3 and now I’m at 19.8 with the 2.5” lift.

With a strong head wind It can be as low as 18 mpg and as high as 20 with a tail wind.

Sucks a little that I’m back near 5.7L Tundra territory again.

21.5 on my last 450 mi trip this past week. 2012 SR5 Premium, 1" front level with Falken AT3's in stock size. To be fair it was all highway. I see 18 or so on country roads and around town combined. 131K on this thing.

I would not worry too much. I have a 2018 SR5 Prem. and I have never gotten over 17 MPG. With that said, I am sure I am getting better mileage, but the computer can be vastly inaccurate. I now get 16.5 MPG no matter how well behaved I drive. I have minimal mods and no roof box. Try removing the negative battery terminal for over 4 hours to reset the ECU. It may take several weeks, but you should see those numbers improve. If not, maybe the construct some sort of wind deflector for the front of the piano box to improve the airflow over the vehicle. Good luck OP.

step 1 is verifying your MPG by actually calculating it at the pump, have you already done that? it will be a lot lower than stock though - you lifted it, put heavier tires on it, and added wind resistance and weight so yeah nothing you can do about that

are your tires properly inflated?

lifted limited here with 285s. i sit in a lot of stop and go traffic and my long term avg is in the high 15s

one thing to consider, is if you get ethanol in your gas...
pretty sure that just kills fuel economy..

i get 13.7 city driving.. supercharged, and slightly larger then regular load c tires. still sucks. i get 13.3 on my raptor. nothing fuel efficient here

Not all cars calculate mpg the same. Some calculate mpg averaging in when the car is stopped and running. I have another car that gives me the option to stop the calculation when the car is not moving. Makes a HUGE difference. The 4R averages in when at idle, just sit there and watch the avg drop. I guess you could argue either way, but published averages don’t include sitting stopped in a traffic jam for an hour with the ac blasting.

Anyway, reset it on the highway and see what you get without stopping, you will feel better. Or do as others have suggested and calculate it yourself.

Although I do have a full rack I made a fairing for it, I went from 18mpg (rolling highway, lots of traffic, 5,000 ft) to 19.8 with a fairing. Finally a mod that helped! Took averages on the same section of highway 4 times, 60 miles each way then averaged with and without fairing. Could have been better because the fairing also included a rod vault.

20mpg hand calculated on my last fill up with all the mods listed below.

OP - I'd look at your tires size and weight as your reason for crappy gas mileage.

1) Calm down
2) Don't trust your readout
3) Nobody gets 12 without a many hundred pounds added to the T4R

I have been collecting MPG data on the vehicles I drive/have driven for nearly 40 years. Now E load tires. No other mods.

Your commute distance and speed impacts MPG. For example - my commute one way from my residence to work is about 3 miles. That hurts my MPG.
My commute to my GF's is about 15 miles from my residence. On a work day it's nearly all stop and go traffic. That hurts my MPG.
Long trips get me 19 ish MPG. These are vacation tanks that are consumed in a shorter time frame.

With that said. The factory tires resulted in about 17.5 MPG daily driving that way.

With the E load tires - about 16.5 MPG daily driving.

Also - the computer MPG is accurate. I have been comparing that data to my trusty hand division from the receipt gallons and miles traveled.

The things that kill your mpg are the "leveling" lifts - I think these are the worst offender of all. Then the roof racks next and extra weight after that. I have about a 2-2.5" lift with factory rake and no roof rack. At 75mph I can still get about 19mpg calculated on the dash with 33" tires. Fully loaded with the fridge, camping gear, etc and roof rack with awning I averaged 16.7 on the dash over 1,400 miles on my last long road trip. That was with 34" E rated tires.

I really think it's changing the factory rake that causes the most MPG loss along with other stuff hung on the outside. That's why the TRD Pro also gets dinged by 1mpg is my bet. It's why I did the air suspension originally on mine and why I've been looking since then for a solution up front so I can run full air ride that I can setup to ride at least stock height or ideally 1 or 2 inches below that on the highway and then bump up to +3 for the trail.

Mileage is sort of a big deal for me. I removed my 4.56 diff gears and went back to stock because I was only getting around 15-16mpg on the highway. With 3.73 I'm back again to 18-19 again. If I ever go up to 35s or 37's all swap back to the 4.56 for sure. But for 33" tires and my normal driving (empty and a lot of highway miles with street tires on), the 3.73 just worked better for me. For the love of god someone needs to make a 4.10 gear set. Something in the middle would really be ideal. Or Toyota just need to give us the 6 AT or 8AT so we can get decent highway cruising mpg with 4.56 gearing.

I'm hovering around 14-15mpg but I have a shit commute (4.7 kms to work and it's entirely stop and go -lots of lights, lots of stops, most done on a barely warm engine. Drop kid off at day care, car is running while I drop kid off, then I hit a drive thru to grab a coffee, then work which has 3 lights which I always seem to hit).

I recently did a short 1hr trip out of town and the highway was nice. The runner wanted to get 18-19 mpg on the highway and I have d load tires and was also hammering on the gas to pass a lot of people on one-lane stretches. I only see 11-12mpg in the dead of the winter where it's -40, the engine is working hard with all the cold air, I use my car starter for 15m to warm the car up, lots of donuts in the snow, heavy on the gas to pass slow drivers, 4hi is almost always engaged, etc.
