Gas Mileage

Hi Guys, I picked up my 10 limited 4x4 on saturday and my gas mileage has been between 14 and 15 mpg. This is with eco mode on! Can you guys give me some suggestions as to how I can increase the gas mileage? I use regular gas. Its been really cold out here in Buffalo, NY and I drive normal, not someone with a lead foot here! This is below what the epa specifications are!

Do you have the factory tires? Are they inflated properly? I assume you drive only city and no highway? How many miles are on the vehicle? Has maintenance been done?

Don't forget the 4Runner is good on gas mileage like the Miata is a family vehicle.

the truck has 69500 miles, they put on a set of brand new bridgestone duellers for me yesterday, I do mostly in city driving, very little thruway driving. I have no clue about the general maintainance, but I had them do a full mobil 1 full synthetic oil change before delivery. I work for the autogroup i bought the truck from and trust their work. I just dont know why I am getting such poor mileage. I do understand that its no family car and I dont expect it to be, but its really crappy gas mileage!

If it helps, I rented a 2014 SR5 Premium last month and I was averaging 14mpg in NYC and with some highway. I dont drive like a grandma so Im sure if I stayed in the slow lane it would have been a little better, but it seems that in the city that is a realistic number.

I never go by what a vehicle is rated for. I always expect less than that. For instance, my 2012 Nissan Rogue is rated 22/26 and I average 18.5 mixed. Hope this helps.

Both of those will hurt fuel economy. I'd say it's doing about as good as can be expected, under the conditions it's being used.

Is it the full time 4x4 limited? That could be making it a bit lower than a part time. I just put a radflo lift and 255/80/17 Cooper st maxx tires on mine and am managing about 15.2mpg around town down here on my 2015 trail. I thought it was a little low too but seems to be the norm.

Here in D.C., my wife's and my commutes are basically the opposite - mine is 85% highway and about 25 miles round trip. Hers is 100% city and about 23 miles round trip. I average about 18 (if I'm good) on a tank of normal commuting whereas whenever she takes the truck for a couple days, she averages around 15. City vs. Highway driving and how heavy your foot is both have a huge effect on fuel economy.

On a recent 70 mile trip home from Front Royal, I averaged 22.3 mpg and that's with a lift and e-rated tires going the speed limit. I think I only tapped the brakes 1 time on a 50 mile stretch of that.

I've averaged 16.7 with mine for the first 2500 miles. Only things that effect mileage for me is stock size duratracs and an afe intake. That's including a few days of 4wheel drive up here in Michigan visiting family. Oh and I have have the afe spacer. It was a gift, don't judge.

For better gas millage you can trade it in for a prius! Your gas milage is right where I would expect (if not better) considering Freezing winter , all city driving pushing a 4800lb SUV that has the aerodynamics of a brick. Look up the exact testing conditions for the EPA tests and you will find they are far from the conditions you are driving in. If it makes you feel any better my display shows 13.8

In nice weather, I consistently averaged 19-20 in my 14 Trail. But, I don't even check in the winter. In my opinion, cold weather makes a huge difference. Think how much more power the truck needs to get those cold axles turning in the morning.

Deal with it through the winter, then start checking it again in spring. It'll be better.

As per above. Also, are you warming up the vehicle for more than 10 or 20 seconds in the driveway? That will hurt too. 14 mpg is petty bad. I think I only had 1 or 2 spurts last winter with that kind of consumption. I typically am in the 15-16 range.

I was in Front Royal Aug 2013 for our DC trip. Took the I66 out. Stopped at the Shell just off the highway and went to Skyline Drive. Beautiful scenery.

I drive about 60 miles a day (90% highway) and I drive a 2014 SR5 Prem. I get on average 19.4 mpg. However, that's with no mods.

My last tank was 17.9mpg 95% city driving. My first tank on the highway was 23.9 - driving from Montana to Utah in a winter storm so I was going 55. At 80mph I'm right at 20mpg. In a mostly stock '15 TEP with stock size Wrangler ATS tires. I rarely have *cold* starts - I park in a garage and Utah doesn't get very cold in winter compared to northern states.
