gas troubles

I have noticed that after the pump automatically shuts off when the tank is full; I can put up to 2 gallons more gas in the tank.

depending on who makes the nozzle, they usually shut off when the nozzle (checkvalve) detects a backflow, some are more sensitive than others. its a safety issue so you dont keep pumping the gas and the tank overflows and gas starts spewing out onto the ground.

Mileage on the Computer and Actual at Fill

I am a new 2004 V6 Sports Edition owner and get little if any correlation between the computer caluculated milage and actual based on fill up and divide into miles traveled. I reset the computer at each fill up so it is usually and average or about 250 miles. The difference is greater in colder weather than in warmer spells. I am a conservative driver (unless the devil makes me go faster in my older Bimmer '91 325 IC which has to go 80 or faster) and also I only have 3200 on the 4thang and want to be gental for the first 5K. I am averaging about 15 to 16.5 based on mileage/gallons but the computer tells me I am doing 18.5 to 19/gal. Does anyone know if the puter is working on a learning algorithm and this differential will eventually correct or is it a case of what you see is what you get? Now, even though I did not buy the Sporty 4Thang to speed around in I do get the impression that I won't be disappointed as it is only turing 1800 at 65mph and red starts at 5500.

You have probably already realized this, but you can learn a great deal here, & be entertained as well. It's a good board.

There are some technoid explanations to the 'error,' as it's commonly refferred to here. Most of them are over my head - I dig in the dirt for a living - But, as beautifully built as my truck is, & considering the design genius level of Toyota, I'm convinced it's well focused marketing hype. Remember, we're 1%ers on this board. The other 99 won't actually do the math - probably not even the magazine dudes doing the reviews - so the Runner will simply develop a better MPG reputation than it deserves. I think this is coming down exactly as Toyota planned.

I like the conspiracy theory listed above, one (besides the car freaks on this board) might really believe that mileage computer. I am sure that they could have made it completely accurate if they had wanted to. They might have made it always errr to the high side. I know already my runner gets better than other SUV's, I consistently get 22mpg on the Highway were as the computer says 24, but my dad has an Explorer and he gets 17 on the highway so you can see already that if we were comparing I could say that it gets 24mpg. Hmmmmmm........

Wanna talk about MPG on the lowside? Everybody get in line right behind me....coming out of the ole' 5.9 GC w/ Mopar PCM, etc., etc., etc. It was a kick in the butt, but gulped premium like fraternity kids @ a keg party. :zoom:

Milage and the Milage Computer

Well, it appears that the only consistancy is inconsistancy. So the protocol seems to be that we watch and fret the lower than advertised milage and smile and say it is great if the rest of the world asks. At any rate it is better than my '75 FJ40 that I am waiting for so it can go back on the road, now that is an ethel sucker that at its very best gets 9.5/gal but it is geared to pull down a house. On the positive side the 4 Thang is sweet.
Now. am I breaking protocol to ask another question? The Consumer report is praising the V8 and panning the V6. Does anyone know what they consider wrong with the V6 and have there been an reported or un verbalized complaints or disasters.

Consumer Reports on V6

The consensus seems to be that there is nothing wrong with the V6. There was some recall of the early '03 V6 because of something like a fuel pump problem and this is why Consumer Reports derated it. I think the consensus now is that there is no reason to expect the V6 engines to be any less reliable than the V8 engines.
