Gauge Cluster swap

I have the normal gas gauge issues that's plagued lots of the 99/00 yrs. Tried the recalibration and other things and still doesn't work right. My question is can I swap in another gauge cluster? If so is the mileage stored on the ECU or on the cluster itself?

Thanks!

Does anyone know if the 01/02 cluster will work in a 99?

Thanks

Based off the 4Runners I've taken apart, there's enough differences between the 01-02 and the others years that I do not think the plugs will fit. Pretty much anything electrical/ECU related on 01-02's are not backwards compatible. I would look for one from a 99, also pay attention if you need a 2WD or 4WD one.

Still, they are very close. Four of the five plugs are identical. The C27 plug had 20 pins on the '01-'02 and 18 pins on the '99-'00. That doesn't mean all the wires match up. Life is too short for me to go and see if 100+ connections marry between the two. Even then, the signal spec might be different. If I had one, I'd try it. But I'd look for a '99 to buy.

Short answer, I don't know.

Hi everyone,

I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner with the 5VZ-FE engine and 4WD. I'm considering swapping out the analogue speedometer (which displays MPH) for a one from a 2001 Hilux Surf JDM (which displays Km/h and has a digital odometer). Has anyone done this swap before, and is it possible? What challenges or modifications should I expect? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

They have completely different wiring behind them - the swap would be QUITE difficult. The gauge cluster in the '99+ models (with digital ODO) also controls a number of other interior functions (light dimming, etc.) so it isn't just a 'match the wires' kind of thing.

I don't see any of these being compatible completely. 01 and 02 are different and more digital then along. The 1996- 1998 are similar with the 99 and 00 being the hybrid years of the 3rd gen. There are lots of differences in the wiring in general that the with clusters that I wouldn't even try it.. I would just match part number to part number only... Other then that. It would be a gamble and may damage things you don't want damage. :-(
