Gauging interest for bumpers

As some of you may know or have figured out by my roof rack build, I am one for custom stuff / not buying retail stuff for the prices of it. Well I am trying to do that again with a front and rear bumper.

(If you want to get to the point you can scoll down a bit more and not get context)

Story time: So I know that I am going to be doing a front and rear bumper however I do not want to spend $800-1000 per peice (yay for being poor and 19). So I was thinking I would just custom build them from scratch after gaining confedence from the roof rack. Well I am not to sure if I am willing to commit that amount of time, effort, and have the headaches of it. Well now onto DIY weld together kits. I know about the Northwest trail innovations that does a 3rd gen front but I do not really like the styling of it even though it seems close to a shrockworks (I like them the most). Just something about the Northwest one seems weird. Well my dad found a local (for me) start up that is doing bumpers as assembled or DIY called MOVE here in Montana. Currently they are more for ranch trucks being that is the type of stuff they are surrounded by so all the big chevys, fords, and dodges. However I want them to make me bumpers and it is possible that they can make it a sellable thing for other people like all of you.

The interest part: So my question is if any of you would be interested in a DIY kit being that is what I will get (not sure about an assembled bumpers) if I can get them to make it something they will produce in larger quantities and ship. If there is interest what kind of style would you like to see? Personally I like the full plate shrockworks with the single mid tube and was going to design one like that. Let me know what you think. The price would be around $400 for a DIY give or take a bit (probably less). I will be calling them either tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday. I would like to know if there is an interest to this for negotiating some pricing and whatnot, also what kinda style there is interest for.

This is them: Custom Truck Bumpers, Grill Guards and Pre-Runners | MOVE Bumpers as I said they are more of the really large and heavy ranch truck thing now but they are willing to do a front and rear for me (talked a bit today with them), just going to figure out some other stuff like making more than just the one for me. Just guaging interest, nothing set in stone for if it will be more avalible, just a possibility.

I speak for everyone. we are all interested in more options for front bumpers on 3rd gens or all generations of 4runners. :)
 
Northwest trail innovations looks interesting, and I also know that eric at relentless fab is working on a front bumper that he'll offer in kit form. But more options the better.

Always interested in options for our runners. I prefer to build mine as well but I wouldn't turn my nose up at a weld together kit.
 
I really like.the looks of low profile bumper. Like small bumper but strong and not heavy. Would be nice to see. Aluminum one
 
I'm not trying to dog on this MOVE company but they make similar bumpers to Road Armor. These things are huge and offer very little benefits to our trucks. You want something very slender, allows for BETTER ground clearance, and all around very strong but light. In my opinion, you either make something yourself or you order from a company who knows Toyotas and these rigs. Not a company who just slaps gaudy huge bumpers on trucks. There are MANY options out there as far as bumpers go for these trucks, options in which have been tested for years.
 
Bandit sells bumper plans. Have a local place cut it out and then you can weld it together. His took a deer with relatively minor damage

I see your point. They wouldn't be designing it, I would be while basing off a shrockworks / 4xinnovations kinds style. Just using them for getting it into reality. I don't like the style of the bumpers they make being they are just so big, but that doesn't mean that they can't build something that is lighter and good for off-roading. I want it low profile and such. I know there are a lot of other options for the runners but I cont afford a front and rear that is already made, and I don't have the stuff to cut out the metal for bumpers but I know what I want and I know how to weld. So that is why I am doing this. At the end of the day if they don't want to make it good for offroading then I am not going through with it.
 
I would love a rear bumper with swing out but I'm not into the size of the ones offered nor am I the price. I've seen one made for the Jeep Cherokee which was perfect to what I wanted. It was very minimal in design, you didn't have remove your entire bumper and it just bolted right onto several mounting points below the bumper.
 
I would be interested in a DIY kit around that price if it were a suitable bumper and would not cost $300 to ship the kit to me. I'm looking for a basic winch bumper / front skid solution. Of course I want it all - sturdy, solid, and not 300lbs... :-)

Interesting, I am thinking of doing something very minimal with a good amount of clearance for departure angle and having a hitch as well that is as low profile as possible. I am not 100% sure if the swing out is going to happen or not... I am not super into them so personally I probably won't do it but I will see if it is an option that can be done easily.

Going off what I have seen from other diy kits it was about $100 to ship to ship from Washington to montana and $123 to go to Michigan (saw in other thread). And also probably like 100lbs just going off other bumpers.
 
just to put this out there, it would be difficult to make a bumper that weighs more than 200 pounds. it would have to be a beefy 1/4" mofo with thick 1/4" sidewall bars on top. and it would have shit tons of reinforcement.

and it would be awesome.

www.Tiregate.com has a hitch mounted swing out tire carrier that is pretty much exactly what I'm talking about. A few things came to mind about taking this exact design and bolting it to 3 points on our vehicles and removing the hitch mount.

1. The first two points are where the rear recovery hooks are. Remove these and use them to bolt 2x2 steel bars.
2. The second point or third (if we want to be precise) is where the rear tow hitch attaches to. We remove this and now we have 3 points to fabricate something that attaches to these points.

The OEM bumper stays in place, there is much less metal/weight and it still can look pretty clean.

In my opinion there is just too much damn metal on all of these front and rear bumpers. I have a Shrockworks front bumper and I look inside of it and see endless wasted space. Don't get me wrong, I love Shrockworks and Demello designs but then I see something like the Southern Style Speed bumpers for the 5th Gens and wonder why companies don't offer something like this for the 3rd and 4th Gens.

Marshall fabricated his own bumper and even though it's not small like the Southern Style, its still reduces a lot of weight in the areas where metal isn't really necessary and it's a beautiful design.
