Has anyone geared down their Runner? I was able to drive in the orange MT 4Runner which I believe is running 4:56 ring and pinion. I seemed to do a lot better taking off and overall responsiveness. I was not able to get it up to freeway speeds and was curious about cruising RPMs would be. I know it will have a similar effect as poking a hole in the gas tank, but the lack of power and responsiveness is getting to me.

They come stock with 3:73's and 4:56's from JD are the rear gears out for our 8.2 rear diffs to get . Toyota makes a 4:56 rear gear also that was in the rear diff of the rare 2010 4 cyl. but cost about 3 times more.

I went ahead and had Chase at East Coast Gear Supply build mine with ARB lockers and just swapped out the front clamshell and rear 3rd member.They just charge a refundable core charge that's returned when they get yours back.I have over 30k miles on them and run great with no problems.Highway rpm depends on your tire size of course but with 34's(really about 33 1/2's now) I'm about 200-300 rpm over stock if I can even remember back that far .Mines coming up on it's 4th Birthday next month.lol I run about 2200-2300rpm at 70mph .

I average in the neighborhood of about 16mpg if I take it easy and get better city mileage then stock gears actually but much worse at 75-80mph and up.
It's by far the best mod I've done and don't know why more haven't done it besides LT and I ,especially with some of the big tires and heavy bumpers people are carrying. If you got the money I highly recommend them and you won't be disappointed!!

I run about 2200-2300rpm at 70mph .

This seems perfect, my truck is constantly wanting to downshift on the freeway at even the slightest incline. I have got to add gears to my list of things to do.

Crap. Now I have another item on the list... With the weight I'm pushing and 33s, this sounds more practice than waiting for the elusive trd/urd supercharger. Bright side is that it is far less expensive and full arb lockers would be sweet!

I'd think you could do gears and arb lockers for much less than a supercharger. That to me would be much more useful.

edit: reread your post Jordan. I was saying the same thing. gears+lockers at about half the price of supercharger.

Anyone got a cost-breakdown of what lockers plus re-gearing would cost? I think I saw that our lockers are about $1k each, parts alone.

What's a reasonable install price for all that?

This was an estimate from Baertrax,one of the most highly regarded shops for Toyotas in the DFW area and they had just done one of the first on a 2010 FJ with the new 8.2 rear a week before. The estimate did not include installing the air compressor or running the lines as I already had them.

I didn't use them but had this estimate done.As stated in my write-up I had ECGS build them for me for much cheaper and swapped them myself....Call and ask for Chase at ECGS, 5 year warranty .

Competence in something like setting gears up is of the utmost importance and I recommend a shop that has worked with the new 12 bolt 8.2" rears as they are quite a bit different then the previous Gens..
