Gear shift knob change

FJ Shift Knob Installed Yesterday

Finally got my FJ Shift knob in the mail this weekend from Ebay ($15 plus $5 shipping). Really happy with the look and feel as it fits much better in the palm of your hand and matches the 4x4 shift knob.

It barely screws down tight enough without modifying it, but I'll be sawing off a bit from the middle like Sandcrawler did so that I can get it to tighten all the way. Will probably just use some gorilla glue to put it back together once I saw it down since it doesn't seem like it will be able to clip back together once it's cut.

I put a pencil eraser tip in the end of mine to "lift" the entire unit - has worked without problems since install (a couple of weeks now...).

Sent you a PM.

How exactly do you "modify" the FJ knob? You cut out a piece of the middle shaft and glue it back together? How do you do that without making it look fugly?

The knob actually pops apart...

Once you pop the top off, you can use a dremel to saw it down a bit. It looks the same once you put the top piece back on, but it doesn't clip together anymore since the clips have been sawed down so you use glue to piece it back together. Looks clean once put back together with no signs of cutting, glue, etc..

I like the FJ shift know. It's not so fricken huge like the stock one. If that a TT FJ knob or a std.FJ knob ??

I would like to cut an FJ one down and replace the shifter shaft . That thing is to fricken long too.

Shift knob question for you guys:

Do you look like a total dork if you have what is obviously a manual shift knob on your automatic transmission's gear shifter?

I love this shifter, and it has the manual gears embossed in the leather.(subtle, so people may not notice) Even worse, one of the pictures shows it on an AUTOMATIC!

Need opinions - I don't want to look like a bigger tool than I already do.

unless you have a manual, which you dont then a shift knob with a gearshift pattern is lame. You could always get it and try to modify it by taking the shift pattern off or covering it up.

Are their different FJ shift knobs through out the years or are they all the same . I wanna replace my factory huge one badly .

I am also willing to replace my 4wd knob to match the FJ one if I have to .

The FJ knob I picked up off ebay matches the stock 4Runner 4x4 knob perfectly. Not sure what year you need to look for, but if you see a picture of the dark grey one that matches... pick it up! I got mine on Ebay for $15 but there were FJ owners on that forum who were willing to give me thiers for free but were too far and not worth the cost of gas to pick it up.

Thanks to Brad and Falls...you were both trying to be nice and diplomatic, but also gave me the honest answer: I would look like a tool!

I love that shifter! Grrrrrr!

Why do they show it on an automatic!!!???

GRRRRRR!!!!!

That one looks sweet! If you get that one I want one too- or you can buy it and I'll give you...mine! LOL. How much?

ps- If you get one with a manual shift pattern on it my garage door will be LOCKED.

That's the problem. I find it online, and it has the shift pattern on it. Then I find that picture, and it was posted to flickr a year ago. Can't be that scarce.

They might be hard to get and are expensive. JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market and means that it's sold in Japan and not by USA TRD.
Here's a website that let me at least put it in the cart to buy it and that's as far as I went. JDMpit
