Momo makes all different kinds of knobs and you'll need one they classify as a "tall" knob or IMO it would look as you said,kind of wierd.As mentioned Momo's have allen set screws that hold them in place rather then being screwed on. They have rubber inserts that go on the inside to keep them stable.
Rather then cut the shaft, drill out the shifter knob almost the whole way to the top but not out. You'll get about an extra inch and the shaft on the 5ths is an 8mm which translates to a 5/16" drill bit.
Measure the total length of the knob first then wrap tape around the drill bit just a ~1/8" or so less then the knob length. That way you'll know how far down to go without drilling thru the top.
So I got the shift knob and had it on for couple of days. Felt kind of weird having it sitting so tall and the shaft was too thin to install it securely (it wobbles and twists). So I took it off and really studied the new shift knob and figured out how to solve both problems.
The package came with five different "caps" in different sizes so it tops off the shaft and use three screws to tighten the shift knob to the "cap". I used the narrowest cap and there was room to wiggle. What I also found out was the shift knob itself is pretty deep. With just one cap on there, there's about an inch of empty space. So I proceed to put one of the useless cap in the knob all the way in, cut off the top of a second one so the shaft can go through, make a hole of the last cap (the one sized closest to the shaft) so the shaft can go through and hit the top of the shifter, and finally cut off tiny pieces of rubbers to fill any voids for the third cap.
Attached is the finished product. It sits much lower now and doesn't wobble or twist.
Way to improvise and make it happen pimsta!
