Gearing 4.88's

South Hill. I have gone down to Black lake auto in Olympia with good luck, but you have a ton of junk yards around your area. I usually wait for 4Runners being parted close. Find a 2nd gen being parted, then call and ask what the diff code is.

Manual, yeah but i have to drop to 4th and keeps it up around 4-4.5k rpms just to keep it going up the hill :/ My 3.0L i've tried to keep it up and repair it. I was thinking about going with 4.88's and running either 31's or 32's. so it'd be nice to here from CAN since that's what he's running.

Hum....I never really paid attention...also i was running the 3.0 but still had the 4cyl cluster guages, so my rpm readings were all wrong. When sluggish I down shifted. Unless your motor has a big problem, as in it doesn't work anymore...change gears before doing a engine swap. Wiring will likely be a pain with engine swap. 4.56 is good too. I think re-gearing is the right way to be able to turn bigger tires. You can also put the 31's on your truck, drive it, and if it is unbareable to you, change the gears, if bearable, don't need too.

Just a heads up. Running 4.88 with 31's I noticed axle wrap. But I'm also spring over axle. With the 33's I don't think it is as noticeable.

so i looked at my vin card. I have G254, so i have an 8 inch ring gear with 4.56's and 4 pins. So if im having power issues with 4.56's on 30x9.50x15 would changing to 4.88's and 32's would that increase my power, keep it the same, or reduce it?

Also i believe i have an open diff which means only one tire spins right? or power is transferred to the faster spinning tire (ie slipping) right??

You shouldn't having any problems turning 30's. Heck, I was turning 32's with 4.56's and a 22re. When was the last time it had a full tune up including all the fluids changed? Have you tried sea foaming the motor? Honestly I think going to 4.88's would be a waste unless you went 33's or larger. Spend the money on a good tune and flush out. Those 4.56's should turn 32's without hesitation.

Yup. When your differential feels one wheel turning faster than the other (like when you're turning), it freewheels the slower wheel to prevent tire scrub. But your differential isn't smart enough to know the difference between a wheel moving faster because you're turning, or a wheel moving faster because it's lost traction.

You shouldn't have any power issues at all with 4.56 gears and 30" tires. 4.56 is the ratio put in trucks with the 31" tire package.4.56 and 32's is a no brainer, even 33's. People have been running 33's with 4.10 gears with the 4 cyl 22R/RE for over a decade (now that's a noticeable loss of power and mpg). But if your going to spend the $$ to regear, go with 4.88's for the 33's you know you will get sooner or later.

ok well then I'm not entirely sure if my motor is good then. I've done the headgasket on it when it blew, did a full tune up only a few months ago, performance plugs, wires, cap, rotor; even changed the oil and oil filter. Did a complete oil change when i did the head gasket only a few months ago since i had the headers off and everything. Unfortunately i'm unsure of the previous 185,xxx miles on it. I'm not sure if it has been red lined a lot or harsh driving, i simply dont know. So with 4.56's running 30's i still dont do to well going up hills, suggestions? The motor swap idea is starting to come back as a plausibility.

Do a compression test, pull your plugs and make sure they're all firing properly, that sort of thing. At the end of the day though, you've still only got 150 hp in a 4500 pound truck. It isn't a racecar...

i thought the v6 had 160hp and 190 toque? (I'm guessing i'm wrong on that, sure enough looked it up i'm wrong)
the 5vzfe has 190hp and 220torque. Both 40 over the 3vze. Now to me i would also do a custom exhaust so that the 5vzfe could breathe better which should add a little hp and better performance. I've also entertained the idea of running a supercharger or turbocharger (suggestions) I can do a compression test on the cylinders probably this weekend. Now that i'm home from college it's easier to work on my truck.

Yeah, a clogged cat converter.
The first sign is loss of power going uphill, but seems OK otherwise.
And your truck is how old with how many miles on it? with original cat conv?

No easy way, Pull it off and point a light through one end and if you can't see light from the other end is a good indication.

What diff do I need?

Sorry if this has been answered, but If it is, I am new enough to this that I dont understand it. My 87 4Runner has rear end gearing at 4.88, and not the front. Previous owner wasnt using truck offroad, but wanted to have it look like it. Its sitting on 33's and has rebuilt 22RE w/ auto. I want to return the 4wd functionality for winter and need to know what year diff I can get thatll already be geared correctly so I can more easily and inexpensively restore it.

I'm sure some of the more seasoned 4 Runner guys will chime in but I don't think any 1st gens came with 4.88. You'll have to look for a 2nd gen that came with an automatic and 31 inch tires. Your prior owner changed the gears for the larger tires so at least you have half of the job done.
This is a good view of what is stock.

Keep in mind the lower the ratio the less strength the ring gear has. Not sure what your plans are for the rig but 4.88 is pretty weak compared to a 4.10
