Gearing for 33's and 35's

Chart is based on a drive gear of 1:1 at 65 MPH using a manual transmission.
Automatic transmissions will run a slightly higher RPM do to slippage.

Auto 1:1 is 3rd gear/OD off. Chart is what I used for my choice.
My 01 at 65 is turning 3225 by factory tach which puts it in the 4.88 gears.
Turn on OD rpm's drop in the 27-2800 range avg. 18-19 mpg on Hwy most times.
It a sweet spot for me Lockers add extra oomph when I need it.

I hope it's ok to dust off this 7-year old thread in an effort to see if gearing opinions have changed since.

I'm the original owner of my '01 4Runner (4WD, auto). The truck currently has 542,000 miles on the original engine & tranny. I've performed all maintenance & repairs since buying it and intend to keep driving this thing for many years.

I've had nothing but 265/75/16 tires & stock 4.11 gearing since about 2003. At some point I swapped in a lower-mileage front diff and a few years later had Zuk rebuild my third member. I'm now looking to switch to 285/75/16 tires and would like some current thoughts on the most appropriate gearing for my use: occasional, mild trails but primarily long road trips mixed with quite a bit of western Maryland / WV highway driving (long grades).

My engine & tranny still run great, but I know the truck is down on power owing to the mileage. My stock transfer case gearing is more than adequate when needed off road, so I think my primary wish with new gears is keep the truck from being a complete slug on long mountain grades with 33s.

I welcome any & all thoughts on the above.

I regeared for other reasons but from my experience it's impossible to over gear or choose too short of gears for the auto transmission. The manual is a totally other story and often does not need to be but the auto just lugs down low all day long with larger tires.

I have 5.29 gears with stock 265/70R16 tires. Turns about 2800 RPM on the freeway going 70 MPH.
