Gearing help 4.56 yes or no

^Do you have 4.56's with 33's? Auto trans?

No sir on the 4.56's but I do have an auto, I want to swap over to them to see and maybe bump up to 35's. Just kind of a matter of cash flow and time keeping me from doing it right now. It's a good chunk of change to have tied up waiting for someone that needs diffs to buy the old ones.

Dang, I was hoping to get a first hand experience of someone with 4.56's and an auto. I know it's fine with a 5 speed, but I'd rather not shell out all the time and cash if it isn't very noticeable. If I can find a deal though I may have to.

What rigs came with the 4.56 gears stock? Gonna have to keep an eye out for a set of these bad boys.

4cyl with a diff lock. Very rare, but they are out there.

I had 285 bfg at's with my 4.10's and loved it with the supercharger. Went to 35's and 4.88's, and find them to be perfect for the same reasoning as you desire.

You sure you'll never want 35s? If you stick with 33s I think you'll be happy with 4.56's

Correct me if I'm wrong, but for the rear, a different from a 89-95 pickup would work, and factory 4.56s were pretty common in those.

Yes, a rear from an earlier truck or 4Runner will work. If you look hard you can even find factory 4.88s.

Well Hot D@^!, I am going to keep an eye on the pick-n-pull pages for early model inventory. If I can hit it at the right time, I might find me a V6 4.56 rear-end for... what for it.... $39.99 plus tax. Heck at that price I could almost justify an ARB for it :becky: Then just have to find a matching front and 285's here I come!!!

And the factory 4.88 rears are super sweet, but there is something special about them that won't allow the use of aftermarket gear sets. Aftermarket carriers will work, but the housing is offset and it has a thin ring gear so only OEM gears can be used.

I thought the early v6 rear diffs didn't work completely. That you could use the gears, but needed to change something else. I'll try to find an article I read on it. I could be wrong though and people with e-lockers are SOL for that swap anyways.

Some reading for you - Gearratiosanddiffs - it's got the VIN codes for the different gears so you know what you're looking at. 4.56 is fairly common in the second gen trucks.

The 4.88 housing and r&p are unique - the carrier is the same but the housing is different, so the only gears you can ever put in there are the factory 4.88. If you find one at a wrecker don't hesitate to grab it though... a junkyard 4.88 is still way cheaper than new gears and setup for your existing third. :)

I haven't heard anything like that, I'd be interested to know what you saw. As far as I know, an open 8" third is an open 8" third is an open 8" third, and the 4cyl and v6 versions are all freely swappable.

Almost. Toy has 3 different bolt patters that they have used for driveshafts so the drive flange would probably have to be changed on an older third member to mate with a 96-02 4runner ds

The later model pinions are 30 spline, early model are 27 spline. Almost every gear mfgr states you have to swap to a 27 spline pinion to use aftermarket gears. Only OEM pinion flanges will work with the later model OEM pinions. This is only on 4runners. TheTacoma/tundra diffs are different completely I believe.

Subscribed. I will be in this same boat later this year.

Have 4.30s and 32" now. I am planning on re-gearing later this year though when new tires come due. My plan was to go to something in the 33-35 range with either 4.56s or 4.88s by picking up used factory Toyota diffs.

I am sure I am not the only one with the question, so - what about the front diff? I know the 1996 and up Runners' front 7.5 has reverse cut gears and is a different desing, but can an earlier 7.5 3rd member be swapped in? I read the link that you posted Kid, and it sounds like my answer is no. Anyone know from experience?

If they did interchange, that would make picking up 4.88s out a 2nd gen 4runner/pickup fairly easy, at least for those without e-locked rears.

Marlin Crawler makes the flange adapter.

86-95 front diffs are standard 7.5 thirds and 96+ are reverse cut 7.5 clamshells so they don't interchange

That was what I gathered from the reading. Thanks for confirming!

Too bad... There are sets of front 4.88s floating around pretty frequently on yotatech.
