Gen8 Maps Update

First off sorry guys if this is asked elsewhere, trying tapatalk and search came back with nothing.

I just got an email from Toyota saying new Gen8 maps are ready for update for my 2015 SR5 T4R. A discount price of $170 from $250. Is this worth it? Can I just do it myself somehow? Wait till next update?

From everything I've seen on here, I dont think you can do it yourself. My only question is, do you really need it? Have that many roads changed in your area or where you want to go? In my experience, the major roads don't change and I don't ever see myself paying for a map update unless I just have money to burn.

I don't know if your newer radio is different than my JBL system, but I bought a Gen8 disc off ebay for $12 and it works just fine.

I think I will wait, I don't see a NEED for it now. Got no road trips planned next year and I know all my local roads. I would rather spend the money on something mind altering. :cheers:

I did the update (worked a deal when I bought my 4Runner), all it was is just swapping out the microSD card.

As stated earlier, there's no need to spend money on an update unless there are major road changes in your area or the area you're planning to travel to.

I just use the free WAZE app on my phone. Never even bothered to figure out the installed nag function, knowing updates are not free.

We drove our new 2016 500 miles straight from the dealer to a 4-day camping trip. On the way, it took us on a 25-minute detour through a major city for some construction that apparently had actually been completed months prior. I know this because my phone told me to co to ue straight in my car, while the wife in the 4runner followed the GPS and sent us on a wild goose chase.

Ever since then, I pretty much knew I would only use it for reference (i.e. just making sure I am turning onto the correct streets when I am generally route-familiar). But, I won't rely on an outdated map service, using outdated technology, that I have to pay for, when Google will give me continually-updated map service for free.

I might update it every 5 years or so, but it is a secondary feature to me, now.

The only caveat might be that I will consider updating it once we move outwest and do a lot more vehicle-based traveling in more remote areas, just to back up saved maps on my devices. Otherwise, again, I will alwys use it as more of a handy visual reference rather than my primary source of navigation.

With everyone owning a smart phone and with how lack luster the GPS is on the 4Runner, at least on my 13, i'd never spend a dime upgrading it.
