General Grabber at2 vs. Goodyear SilentArmor

So... I am looking for a good all around a/t tire for my 4Runner. I have narrowed it down between the Grabber at2 or GY SilentArmor. Mainly because they both have decent reviews and have the snowflake/mountain symbol that states they are "good"/legal for winter traction. The Grabbers are about $40 cheaper per tire. Looking mainly for good winter and summer traction... Does anyone have experience with either of these? If so, what is your pick out of these two?
I am sure either will beat out my current Dean SXT mud terrains. They are horrible on packed snow/ice.

I have The at2 and I love them. It doesn't snow much here in the south but last year they did good in the snow as far as I am concerned. Drove with about a inch or 2 of snow on the road and never had any trouble. And then I did a drifting doughnut in my grandpas field. Fun stuff. :p
 
I too have the Grabber AT2s and love them. I think they are better in the snow then the BFG A/T.

Don't have any experience with the GYs..
 
i have the grabbers also, they are great. they are quiet and handle well on the road, and have no problems off road. they feel solid around 90mph too.

I saw that... That is why I am going to go with 265/70/16 tire. It is the "recommended" size for my 4Runner anyways. And this size comes in a lighter ply and comes with the snowflake severe weather stamp.
 
i too have the grabbers, I've had them for about 3 to 4 years maybe more? and they still have about 1500K miles left on them.

I've driven them in the snow mud, dirt, wet and everything and they perform GREAT! i love them. I'm pretty sure ill get them again. On top of all that, they look great! definitely add an aggressive look to your runner

Thanks for the input.. looks like everyone has had good luck with the Grabber AT2. So, I think that's what I will go for. My current Dean SXT Mud Terrains do fine in the warm weather... but suck horribly on slick roads. So, I might as well go with a all around tire since I dont off-road that much.
 
I haven't had any experience with the AT2, I have however owned the silent armor goodyears. Dry = ok. Snow = pretty good, and wet = totally $h!tty. Like scary bad. I had them on my '97 Tacoma. Pretty bad when you have to use 4X4 whenever it rains.
 
Thanks for all of the feedback... I really wanted to give the Grabber AT2 a shot.. but TireRack has them on back order and said it might be 8-10 weeks before they arrive. By then, winter would be over. HaHa. Maybe I will take a look at other sellers.... Anyone have any advice on another AT tire that does great on snow and ice? Anyone have any experience with Road Venture SAT KL61? They are rated pretty well on TireRack.

dang! yeah those are some popular tires. it seems they are always on back order/ check out the Duratracs, Those are another favorite on this forum

That extra $40 per tire is buying you one thing - "Goodyear" written on the side of the tires. Seems every vehicle I buy comes with GY's on it and I can't wait for them to wear out to get something else. Fortunately, my 5th gen came with Duelers on it and the used 3rd gen has BFG's with about 40% tread left on them. I happen to like the BFG's in the snow and offroad but they can be a little noisy and rough riding on the road. I replaced GY Wranglers with BFG's on 3 of my former vehicles and was happy with the decisions. On my truck, however, I got fooled when the Wrangler HP's on it lasted 55k miles and wore smoothly. So, I unexplainably ordered another set of them. I've got 35k on them and they are cupping so bad it's not funny.

I said this a while before buying the last set of Wrangler HP's, but now I mean it, I'll never pay money out of my own pocket for GY tires again, at least not LT tires.

Go with the Grabbers. But the Nittos are nice too.

I would not go as far as lumping ALL Goodyear tires together and saying they are not good. Some are bad - I had Wrangler ST on my JGC a while ago and they were bad. Probably the only tire that was worse that Wrangler ST was the Dunflop Grandtrek AT20.

As for the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor - I've had them since August 2010. These tires are awesome. Performed great during last winter snow storms, great traction on wet roads, excellent performance on dry. My off-road experience with them is rather limited - only 1 trip with light wheeling, but I was happy I had GYSAs.

Aggressive, but not too aggressive, look is an icing on the cake.

I would definitely recommend Silent Armors.
 
You are probably right about lumping them together. But I've had it with them. The thing for me is, they do seem to ride and perform fine. I've just never had a set that lasted like I think they should, other than the HP's that came stock on my truck. That's why I bought another set. My truck has always had a better ride than any other half ton I have driven, which includes all of the big 3 makers. The tires look good on it, and I don't go hunting for mud, but I've found some on occasion, as well as snow, and the tires haven't let me down yet. But I had 2 jeep vehicles (wrangler and liberty) that had Wranglers on them and they would never wear even and wore out too soon, I had a set on my last Ram that did the same thing - cupped something terrible. I've kept the pressure right, made sure they were balanced, had alignments done - nothing seemed to help. Replaced the ones on my old Ram and Wrangler with BFG KO's and they were far better in my opinion. Put Michelin LTX's (wife's dd) on the Liberty and it was like getting a new car when I drove away from the tire shop.

All that said, I've never had any Silent Armors. But given my past experience, I probably never will. Since my 3rd gen is never going to be an offroad beast, it's probably getting a set of LTX's next.

If I was in the market I'd be seriously looking at Kuhmo KL78. When I re-arranged the Consumer Reports A/T tires rankings based only on traction categories, they were at the top (incl snow and ice). One of the least expensive tires, too.

Didn't do great in tread wear, but on a miles per dollar basis they'd probably rank high there, too.

Based on Tirerack's website, the tire size you are getting and the three tires you have mentioned, the weight of each is:
Kumho: 38 lbs
AT2: 44 lbs
GY Silent Armor: 51 lbs
That's a pretty big spread in the weight of the tires which will effect gas mileage, acceleration, etc. My BFG's (yeah I know they are bigger and E rated) are 54 lbs each. Buy tires based on your needs and what they will get used for. Just something to think about.
