Generic wheel spacers

When it comes to something like wheel spacers cheaper is not better. If they go bad you could find yourself in a bad spot. Just my .02
 
ive only ran hub centric eBay spacers on all my rides. proper torque techniques and checking on them whenever you have the wheels off will yield same results. I've never had one back off even a bit.
 
What is the worst that can happen? I would stick with wheels that have the correct offset. You are adding unnecessary risk with spacers. They are great until you have a problem.

So are you saying you don't like wheel spacers?

I was always taught they change the geometry too much and prematurely wear wheel bearings, excessively. That said, it seems like a lot of people on here are running them without complaints. (Or they're not mechanically and automotively inclined to think long term)

I'm just curious what the big deal is w Spidertrax when (from someone that works with sheetmetal fabrication for a living) the Ebay version is the same block of aluminum, same grade bolts, and there is no mechanical function and design (as long as they're both hubcentric)

No problems at all and I have flogged the shit out of my truck! As stated, properly torque them and use some locktight on the studs holding the spacer on.
The fact that these are Hub-centric is preferable as well.

No difference with wear and tear if you use a wheel that is offset instead of a spacer. They both do the same thing in the end. Wheels being offset are preferable in the end because they bolt right up to your wheel studs vs having another set of lugs in there like you get with wheel spacers. Nothing wrong with spacers, as long as one takes the time to properly install them, torque them, and not just slap shit on all willy nilly like some retarded hick. Hey, I know a few of those!! :rofl:
 
I've got over 10k miles on the 1.5" Boss 4x4 hubcentric wheel spacers purchased on Ebay with not even a shake or shimmy.
 
I am only using 5/16 hub centric, 10,000+kms so far so good. Torque them right and check them twice the week following a tire removal.

That is true that they do change the geometry and will put more stress on parts. The same would be true with wheels with the correct offset. The difference is that they add and additional point of failure. One that if it fails will undoubtedly the potential for a pretty bad outcome.

As for the difference between ebay and spidertrax, I think it is more of a question of quality. You can be reasonable sure that spidertrax is using the grade of materials that they state. That may be true too of the ebay products, but you are taking additional risk that someone with not as much to lose may cut corners and use a lower grade of aluminum or not have quality control over the casting or milling process.

My biggest concern over spacers is that they are not DOT approved. If you have a problem that is in any way related to the spacers, you will be on the hook for the bill because your insurance company will deny the claim. This may not be a big concern to you, but if someone else gets injured if a wheel comes off or a wheel bearing grenades, it will potentially ruin you for life financially. That to me is way too big of a risk to take over a few hundred dollars for correct fitting wheels.

The problem you have with spacers is that there will be little warning if any when they fail. You will see many posts of "I have ran them for xxx miles", but that means little if you are running them and they fail. The failure percentage is low, but there are failures. The only way to be 100% failure free is to not run them at all.

Just read it, responded...you installed them with an impact gun!! NEVER install spacers or wheels with an impact gun unless you have one of those torque adapters that limit the torque the gun puts into the bolt/nut! EVER! That's why your studs broke, you stressed them beyond what they were meant to handle. I'm sorry my friend, I don't mean to sound like a dick, but this was 100% user error. Also, if you didn't have the hub-centric ones and you didn't have them completely centered then you added even more stress. Surprised the wheels weren't broken too.

thanks for your concern, this was done at my friends shop, in the proper way, with light torque just to get them on quick then torqued to spec.:bolt:
 
I just put a set of spacers on the rear of my Highlander (long story) and they had a label on the bag that said no impact wrench and 80ft lb max torque (which is light imho for wheel lugs, but anyway...).

I **very** slowly and carefully took down the mounting nuts with a battery DeWalt impact driver until they were just holding the spacer, then torqued them to 80ft lb with a torque wrench by hand. Same thing with the lug nuts -- just home then hand torque.

What I really need is a hub centric wheel adapter. 4runner 6 bolt to Tundra 5 bolt. The ones I have are bolt centric and they shake no matter what I do.
Will probably have to go the new film route.

We currently only have same bolt pattern spacers, no adapters, sorry.

All cool. There is a company that will custom make them to be hub centric, but I can buy 4 rims for an extra $100 over what they want. New rims it will be, one of these days.. Lol
