Getting A New 4Runner, But......

As some of you may have read in the problems and warranties section, my truck has a broken front brake caliper. I found this out after bringing it in for routine service this past Wednesday. The dealer told me that the part is on critical back order and would not be in until at least June 27. Right now, the truck is sitting at the dealer because it is unsafe to drive. In addition, there can be something even more serious with the braking system. Today, the dealer offered to buy back my 2003 4Runner and make a good deal on a new one. They ended up making a great deal on a 2005 V8 Limited in silver. While I am happy about this, I am also very sad about giving up my 2003 Sport. I really liked that truck and it was like part of the family. I washed it all of the time and always made sure everything was maintained. I am picking up the new 4Runner this Thursday but I know it will not be easy leaving the old one behind. I have to say that the dealer really cooperated during this bad situation. I will post pictures when I pick it up.

Bummer.. The Sport had its character..

But on the bright side, you get a new limited.. and a good dealer that is concerned for your safety.. :-)

by the way, do you happen to know if this is a common problem (both the broken caliper and the more serious problem) or if it is something that you just happened to be unlucky with on your Sport?

anyways, bummer about the Sport but congrats on the Limited!

Thanks! A broken brake caliper is not a common problem with the 4Runner. I was the lucky one for that one. The most common problem with the 4Runner's brakes are warped rotors.

Woah...I'm sorry to see your Sport go. It's such a rare truck with the cladding.

It sounds like the dealer is treating you right, that's good. So what options does the Limited have?

ahh.. are they allowing you to transfer your mods over from truck to truck?

This must be your lucky month...a new 4runner AND becoming a moderator on this forum...what else can a man ask for??!!:D You have it all.;):

The Limited they had on the lot was fully loaded. It has nav, XREAS, ride height, and side curtain airbags. Believe me, I am devastated about letting the sport go.

They are letting me transfer my Revos, rhino hitch step, and driver side assist handle. They are giving me a new sport bumper and the other mods the new truck already has. I actually have to go down to the dealer and empty out my old truck because I thought I would be getting it back the next day. Who would think it would turn into this?

That is true. I have to say though that trading in my 2003 Sport never even entered my mind. I wanted to keep that thing awhile!

The way my luck is going I feel like I will win the lottery tomorrow. I mean finding out about becoming moderator Friday and get a new truck Saturday, I am one lucky guy! :D

Mark, you now have two 2005 Limited 4runners? I'm going by your signature. I'm thinking about replacing my wifes 350Z with another 4wd SUV. When I look at all of them out there the 4runner comes up as the right choice if I go new and the Landcruiser if I go used. I really don't see how the Landcruiser would be able to give me any better service then the 4runner (same drivetrain) I guess it all will boil down to whats available when the wife gives me the go ahead. Looks like if I go with the 4runner I won't be the only member with 2 of them :D

No, you won't be the only one. The blue Limited is my parents vehicle. The silver one is going to be mine. I like to keep a talley of all of the 4Runners in the family! :D

I think the Land Cruiser is a nice truck, but it is way too big. It does have the same V8 as the 4Runner with a little more horsepower. The numbers for the Land Cruiser are 275 hp and 332 lb. feet of torque and it is a lot heavier!

If i had a choice, then i would ALWAYS buy NEW. Buying a used car is like buying a used mattress!:D

I hear you. My wife has a friend that drives a new S class Mercedes and I would never want to buy her used vehicle. Also I would be looking in the price range of a 2003 Landcruiser with around 40K miles so it would be "USED" combine that with the poor MPG and the only upside is the "cool" factor and the 15 additional cubic feet of storage space, other than that it needs more maintance then a new 4runner and it won't be much safer, maybe a little because of size. Since I don't off road it wouldn't help me there. But when the time comes if I find a really clean low mileage LC I will be very tempted. I like Rolex watches and they don't make sense either.

Wow, sounds like you have a dealer that is treating you right. From the horror stories I've heard here and in the "real" world they are hard to come by.

Congrats on your new truck too...

I picked up the new truck today. Here is a quick picture I took of it at the dealer. I will have more detailed photos of it tomorrow in the gallery section but the weather was not too nice today!

So they bought back your Sport at full pop??

yeah I am interested in hearing how the deal went down, did they basically "buy back" your 03 Sport? Or did you get trade in value for it?

Hey Mark,

Sweet truck, welcome to the Limited club. I'm curious about how you would compare the difference between the Sport and the Limited's ride with the rear air bag suspension.

No. My Sport was a leased vehicle so they bought it off of the lease. It would have been very expensive to break the lease.

tkr128, thanks a lot!!

Koz, the Limited rides a lot smoother and quiter with the rear air bag suspension. I thought I felt the bumps more in my Sport but that could be because my tire pressure is now at 32 psi instead of 35 psi.
