Getting opinions plz

Second if somebody could please explain what's exactly meant by " road manners " when talking about KDSS. If I don't get the KDSS would this thing suck on the highway?

Thanks

I don't have KDSS so can't speak to that feature, but my 2012 SR5 has a 2 1/2" lift, 285 duratracs and I am amazed at how much I love driving it on longer trips. Very solid on the road. I set the cruise at 80mph where allowed and it tracks fine and is smooth. I briefly considered trading it for a new Tacoma till I regained my sanity. Love this vehicle and find I rarely miss the truck bed I had grown accustomed to with my 3 previous Tacomas. I don't see how you can go wrong with a new 4runner KDSS equipped or not.

You will love the 4Runner, I have a 2015 TP that is 10 months old and just turned 9K miles. I don't have KDSS, as like Saker said, no KDSS in the Gulf States Toyota inventory.

What does concern me is the Tacoma issue...I am planning to purchase one at the end of the year to replace my 1996 T100 commuter vehicle.

This is the first I am hearing about the vibration, I have not test drove one yet. Is it across the line or just with the V6 engine? AT or MT? 2WD or 4WD?

I am looking to get the base SR access cab and 2.7L engine, AT, 2WD, don't need 4WD to get around town and to work.

Thanks,

Check Tacoma world forum. You'll hear all the ins and outs. Depressing in my opinion being a Tacoma enthusiast, but def do your due diligence before plunging ahead with a new Tacoma purchase.

So here is what you need to know. If you want a sunroof, you have to get the premium. That also implies you are getting the Softex man made leather. You have no choice. Some like it, some do not.

I do not so I went with a Trail for the fabric and every option you can get on it.

I had a sunroof in my prior T4R and honestly really don't miss it.

My opinion is get the Trail and spend the money you save over the Premium on KDSS. It is well worth the $1900 it costs.

I was going to recommend you rent a T4R with KDSS but I have never seen anything but SR5's at rental agencies. Not sure you could find a Trail with KDSS as a rental agency.

I think it seems very fair and I have no doubt the 4Runner is more along the lines of what might make you happy.

I had to soak up a TON of negative to get out of a Cherokee Trailhawk and into one of these great vehicles. Zero regret doing it.

Good luck

Will add more comments...

I have had 4WDs all my driving days, all Fords. I traded in a 2005 F150 for the TP and never looked back. It is by far one of if not the best truck I have ever owned. My wife's Expedition is like a lumbering dinosaur compared to the TP. You will not look back. My daily driver, 1996 T100 jus clocked over 250K miles and still ticking.

I'm not sure why people associate KDSS solely with highway driving. KDSS is a sway bar system, so it would be relevant when side-to-side maneuvering on smooth surfaces whether it is highway or not. Then on rough surfaces, the sway bar articulates more dynamically so the tires stay on the road better. It came over from the Land Cruiser product.

It puzzles me that there are so many TEs without KDSS. Here in Colorado, you are hard-pressed to find a TE without it. I bought my TE almost 2 months ago and there were 3-4 TEs on each lot, all with KDSS! Maybe it is just because they expect Colorado drivers will want that feature more?

I think a big reason to get a TE is because of KDSS availability. My advice would be to see if you can get it in the deal. The T4R with KDSS is a phenomenally good on-road driver for a BOF SUV.

As for moonroof, I actually did not want that since I am tall and need every millimeter of headroom. So a non-premium TE was fine with me. I added Katzkin leather seats both rows with heaters in front seats for about $1000.

To KDSS or not to KDSS

The thing is you need to drive one to know what all the feedback on this thread is talking about. This is a much debated option only for TE that frequently comes up. And it’s argued back and forth if it’s worth it or not. In the end only you can decide that for yourself. Take a test drive of any SR5 or TE without KDSS, and then drive a TE w/KDSS back to back. Drive them over the exact same route (if at all possible), using the same driving style and let that guide you. Researching KDSS is a large part of what brought me to this great forum. So if is right for you go for it! If it’s not, there are plenty of members without it too. In any trim the 4Runner is a great vehicle in my opinion. Hope that you’re able to move forward with your decision on a 4Runner soon. Best of luck to you.

This website attracts the 4Runner enthusiast. The TE model with KDSS sells around 5% of total 4Runner sales but this forum has a disproportionate amount of TE owners from all over the place.

If you drive 20K/yr and went truly off road (4wd and actually worried about articulation) for 200 miles a year then that would put you on the road 99% of the time, hence the importance of on road versus off road.

A lot of people here either wish, dream or think they "live" off road but the reality is very few do so.

Hello Mr. 1Engineer, sir! If you are correct, and you probably are, then your logic says nobody should get a TE at all. Just get an SR5, and if creature comforts are important, the SR5 Premium. Or Limited. And keep it stock. Then have fun driving the perfectly straight and smooth roads to the mall and back. You could extend the same logic to say that nobody really needs a T4R. The Sienna is a more useful, safe, comfortable, and economical vehicle for those 99 percenters. I own one (and previously owned 2 other Siennas, and 2 Camrys).

But if you are going to get the TE anyway, despite the fact that few really "need" it, why not get KDSS, which is a great option that only adds, what, about 3% to the price?

I realize it is a never-ending debate, but I opted for KDSS and I'm glad I did (not that I had much choice, since essentially all TE on the lots here in CO have KDSS).

coming from:

2006 FJ Cruiser -> 2012 Tacoma Sport -> '13 Wrangler JKU Moab -> a vehicle that had magnetic ride control, on-road manners were relatively important to me; test driving stock suspension, X-REAS, and KDSS back to back after driving my (previous) vehicle to the dealership, and then reading the forums for some additional anecdotal evidence, I went with KDSS as it fit my needs the best.

i'd say find a dealer that has all of the options, test drive them all, then pick out a TE(P) with KDSS.

ymmv, and good luck!

How about threatening to just return the vehicle and see how much more of a deal they can get you. So far you already know what's on the table, put your poker face on and see if you can get them to fold. Good luck! I had a taco before and now own a t4r and I don't miss my bed but 2-3 days out of the year when I need to move large things. Other than that I'm glad I have a HUGE trunk!
