I started building my 5th gen. last summer but did not get far. I intended to leave it pretty well stock, tires and an Icon stage 2 lift and that would be enough. But I suffer from a modding addiction and should not hang around others that are modding. And to be honest, I miss the bad@ssness of my FJ. So, I gave in and decided to go all out with the 4Runner too. And it will be better outfitted by this year's Summit.
I am terribly impatient and have a late start on this wheeling season. I have been shopping for deals everywhere I can find them. I found a huge savings at Discount Tire if I took their credit card and that lead to a set of new 285 Hankook, MTs. I love the stock TE wheels but they needed a bit more offset which lead me to a set of Spidertrax. I found an awesome deal on a 12k pound, synthetic line, waterproof, Smittybilt winch. I did not need 12k but it cost less than the 10k, so I had to do it. I could not pass up a lifetime mechanical warranty either.
This is my 6th Summit and experience has shown me that I need sliders. I have actually used my sliders as a winch point to hold me from a near roll over. Let alone a hi-lift jack point or their intended purpose of avoiding side scraps. I had Demello hydrid bolt-on sliders on the FJ and decided to go that way on the 4Runner as well.
Back to the build, at lunch I got a call from the San Antonio UPS Dispatcher. They wanted to schedule the freight delivery of my Demello bumper this Friday. I have always loved their bumpers but I am always waiting for a deal. And this time, my patience paid-off. And their spring deals persuaded me to pull the trigger. And the discount was the whole reason I pulled the trigger.
There is a kind of peace and enjoyment for me building a truck that I intend to use with my daughters and friends this summer. I enjoy the camaraderie of the Toyota community. And if I find a deal I always call my friends to see if they want to get in on a bargain. So, if anyone else is waiting for a deal to continue their builds I wanted to pass this along.
