thanks for the replys. Alabama4Runner you have been a big help. i think im just going to live with my engine the way it is now, maybe a new cam, and then in spring, go to a bone yard, and pull out a 22RET. how common are they? 4runninAZ, turning a n/a (naturally apirated) vehicle in to a forced induction (either turbo or supercharger) is a hard and painstaking process. i used to own a 94 probe gt, and i was quoted $6000 to have a full turbo setup, mind you thats with intercooler and aftercooler, oversized wastegate, and compact hotpiping kit, yada yada yada. of course a basic turbo assembly wont cost that much. think about this for a second. if normally, you run around .77 psi boost, and you suddenly ram 16 more psi boost into your engine, it WILL detonate, and blow your engine to smithereens. so you have to have a timing re****er, that is in sync with your boost pressure. i have heard of some engines that have -53 degrees timing, under 20 someodd boost psi. you also have to rig up some kind of extra fuel pump, as under almost full boost, your intake runs lean, so you need more fuel at higer boost and rpm. you also need a wastegate, which regulates the amount of exhaust going to the turbine side of the turbo, therefore regulating the amount of boost psi your engine can handle. you also have to have a blowoff valve, as think about this. if you stomp on the gas after a corner, and are running 17 psi boost, and then some deer or some drunk on a lawnmower drives out in front of you (lol) and uyou have to hit the brakes, while you are running 17 psi boost, you will have -17 psi of boost between your turbo and carb (if you are blowing through carb) or between your carb and turbo/intake (if you are sucking through the carb), and it will absolutly kill the engine, to idle speeds for a good section of time, and in some cases even stall your engine. the blowoff vavle is that hissing steam noise you hear from any ricer civic if they have a turbo and they let off the gas. there is so much more involved in installing a turbo, to anyone who would like some more information, and some mathematical calculations, or just some questions, please feel free to PM me. so 4runninAZ i hope i answered your question enough. that is the reason why i am doing the 22RET swap, as it already has all the necessary mods done to it, and i can just install a biggetr turbo, (possibly a Garrett a/r 89 or bigger turbo, or possibly a schwitzer) because i dont have time/money/patience to add a turbo to my stock 22RE. so what i am going to do, is buy a 22RET, tear it apart, bore/stroke, port/polish, new heads, cam, headers, bigger turbo, as max compression as i can go (probably like 8.8:1 or 9.5:1) and clean it all up, and hopefully run around 250-300 hp on medium boost. again, thanks for the help, and i hope that i can help any of you that have questions regarding turbo chargers. thanks,
Jake Engel
