Gibson catback exhaust for 3rd gen! Labor day special starting now! Video attached

I just installed this system a few weekends ago on my dual cat system so I can offer some insight. In the instructions it says to cut the pipe portion of your muffler 2 inches before the actual muffler, and then you would slide the Gibson muffler over that leftover pipe and secure it with one of the included clamps. With the dual system what I did was ignore that instruction and had a 2.5 inch diameter pipe welded to a flange. You bolt that pipe to the second cat flange cut it to length and then use a 2.5in butt clamp to attach the Gibson muffler to the pipe you had made. I did have some clearance issues with the exhaust hitting the frame cross member and the hitch like some of the other people here. For that you need to make sure the muffler is rotated between 5 and 6 o'clock like the instructions say and really crank down on all the clamps so none of the pipes move at all. It was kind of a pain in the ass to get adjusted correctly but it does sound pretty good. Its quiet when your not on it and sounds deep yet subtle when you get on it. I bought this system for the lifetime stainless warranty not really for the performance if that makes a difference. The previous owner installed a walker quiet flow a few years back and it was already shot when I took it off so I'm hoping this lasts way longer. I haven't taken the truck off road with the new system on, I'm hoping rougher terrain doesn't cause it to shift around a lot and hit the hitch or cross member again.

Hammit and thanks cnpellegrino for chiming in. I've sold over 30 systems for 96-02 and have sold to guys with the dual cats and never heard back anything after, so good to know these still are working.

Since these trucks are over 20 years old, it's likely the exhaust has been replaced multiple times before, either by you, or the previous owner, so sometimes the correct piping sizes might not always be the same as the Gibson, 2.5" but this is easy to make work. The best thing is, it sounds great and lifetime warranty on the stainless. If you're trying to save a little more, you can go with the aluminized system, 1 year warranty also...

Are all the brackets and bolts stainless as well? Most of all the aftermarket exhaust flanges are steel. ( I see your system eliminated the flanges) How close does the muffler sound to OEM. Louder or quieter?

Mine arrived on the front porch yesterday. I opened the box and admired the shiny stainless steel bling, but haven't put it on yet.

Last time around I replaced the system from the cat on back with a couple of aluminized parts (Walker? Borla? Can't recall) that only cost a couple of hundred bucks. But only 2 or 3 years later, out in Moab, the tailpipe broke free from the flange due to rust attacking the pipe where welding had burnt off the aluminum.

If this SS version only lasts twice as long, I'll break even on cost and *WIN* on hassle by not having to replace it twice. But the hope is that it will last well pas twice as long since it's the 'real' stainless steel, not that 300 series stuff that can and does still rust.

My Gibson SS that I bought last year is extremely rusted. Jason said it’s just cosmetic though and that there’s a lifetime warranty. But if you’re in the northeast this thing will not be shiny for long.

I could be wrong but high grade stainless dosent oxidize very quickly even on exhaust systems. However, low grade stainless does.

I know walkers exhaust will not last 4 years in the northeast.

Yet the OEM mostly made 10 to 15 years before going bad. Those were semi stainless or stainless alloy.

I believe if you have Toyota replace your exhaust through a dealership. They will warranty it for life. I wish that option was more affordable. I priced it several years and I believe it was 3k. [ which prices them out of reasonable cost ]

Look at how the header pipes and cat pipes look after close to 20 years. Mine are looking slightly light oxidized. The flanges rot off. Just like your O2 sensors flanges rot as they are steel and the constant hot and cold takes its toll.

If the Gibson exhaust are oxidizing bad in the northeast. They are probably not what I am looking for.

However, keeps us posted as to how long they last. They maybe a lot better options then what are currently available. :D

Yea! It's insane, you're right, around, $3,000 from Toyota. Nuts!

Oh, the Gibson SS version is warrantied for LIFE. It will never rot out. The less expensive aluminized version carries a 1 year warranty.

What quality of stainless is it? As semi stainless does rust. 404 or high grade stainless will not and mostly magnets won't stick the the high grade stainless steel.

The Gibson Cat back is 409 SS...
409 Ss should not oxidize at all. However, not 100% sure on exhaust systems if it will.

I would try it if it had the ss flanges on it. But they don't. Removing pipes clamped together can be a challenge at times. Once in a while. I may have to remove the exhaust on my rigs so I like my flanges. :)

all stainless rusts. thats why its called 'stain less', it just stains.... less. the stainless we cant get to rust isnt just being put through a harsh enough environment.

i took a tour of an underwater robotics company in college for an internship and i got to play with one of their older arms that was made from stainless before they switched to an all Ti arm. Why did they do this? Because the stainless started to pit/rust from all of the extensive exposure to salt water. it was fascinating, but they didnt want to pay me and the drive was over an hour away each way so ultimately i didnt take the internship. :(

What is the Gibson part # for this?

Its part# 618100, says its for a 1996 4Runner 2.7L 2WD only but is supposed to fit all others, Cali emissions trucks need more of a modification apparently that is what I have I haven't installed mine yet so I cannot confirm the fitment.

In my research 409 SS is ferritic (magnet will stick) and is a lesser grade than 304 SS which is austenitic (magnet does not stick). even 304 SS will get surface rust in my experience from other vehicles I own, (even when parked in a heated garage and never winter driven in winter since new up here in Canada)

I'm going to attempt to fabricate my own down pipe complete with 3 bolt flange to attach to the existing header connection complete with flex joint, 2 cats, 02 bungs. I'm using 2.5" heavy wall 304 SS tubing joining sections with V-band clamps. All will be TIG welded. As of now I can't find the Toyota style flange 02 bungs in SS, just reg steel.

I’m hacking a Gibson cat back SS system for my Tacoma right now - it’s definitely not 304.

I’ve since added a Vband clamp after the muffler to make exhaust pipe removal easy for bed removal. Working on the hangers now.

I was looking for ss flanges to weld on to my cat. I can find them in standard steel but not stainless. I want the 2mm grove for the OEM gasket to sit in.

I currently testing the China stainless steel tailpipe.

I am also trying to find muffler sounding like OEM in stainless.

So if you can fabricate these pipes in high grade stainless steel with stainless flanges. I would definitely be interested.:)

If you know any fab shops that have laser and plasma cutting abilities they could fabricate them for you.

Probably going to have to machine that groove though.

You had the header and cat pipes go bad?

I haven't seen those rot out yet. Just the flanges.

When the cats were changed out by previous owners they just cut off any flanges and welded the cats on directly and added pieces of pipe here and there, looks like a hack job, I don't have to worry about any grooved flanges at the cats, but looking at a pic of the OEM exhaust I can see what your talking about.

My pipe didn't really go bad but downstream 02 bung is kind of blown out and was slathered in muffler cement as a quick fix it seems.
I'm not using OEM cats so if I make that section removable it will be with V-bands.
