Gibson catback exhaust for 5th gen! Labor day special starting now! Video attached

Alright, I've had my exhaust on for about two months now so here are my impressions.

First and foremost I'm coming from having the Magnaflow exhaust for about 4 years so my views may be a little different from one who is coming from a stock exhaust.

The sound for me is much more mellow than the MF at all RPMs especially under load. I like the MF but under load, going up hills and at higher RPMs it kind of got obnoxious. There is a drone with the Gibson but it is much more mellow and hardly noticeable to me. I'm happy with the tone of the exhaust, it makes decent noise without being annoying.

The fit and finish is decent but not as good as the MF. I like the tips but I wish I would've went with the single because the rear tip sticks out farther than the front because it doesn't follow the contours of the bumper since it's designed to fit the Limited as well which has a different bumper profile. Also, the packaging was a disappointment. Everything was just thrown in a big box, which is usually ok but not with powder coated/painted parts. The tips were all scratched up when I took them out of the box. Luckily I had some high heat matte black so not that big of a deal but still.

Just yesterday I noticed that all the welds on the tips are all rusted already, that's a huge disappointment, I mean come on I've only had it on here for a couple months. Not sure what I'm going to do about that just yet.

And here are my tips now. Granted they are a little dirty but so far not holding up so well.

I also sell the magnaflow system, but have had quiet a few think it's too loud and those customers have swapped them for the Gibson I sell and like it better it seems. Hands down the Gibson is the quietest aftermarket catback system you're going to find for this truck. It's got a nice mellow tone, quality sound. Think of a Cadillac Escalade or GMC Denali when you've heard them start, it reminds you of that.

The Gibson is 409 stainless, and can discolor and show surface rust, which is common with 409. This stainless system is WARRANTIED FOR LIFE. If you see slight surface rust or discolored surace on piping, it's the carbon in the metal, again which is common, this will never make a whole or wear through, as it's surface. If you are ordering the SS (stainless steel) you are protected for life with the warranty on the SS, which I stand behind. If anyone is looking for something that doesn't discolor, 304 SS would be a better choice, BUT a choice that can sometimes be 3-4 times the cost. There truly is no system that is this inexpensive that sounds this good. A little more here on surface rust.

I'll share my limited experience.

I attempted to install the exhaust today with the basic tools that were on the instructions and I was not able to do so due to significant rust on my bolts at the flange above the muffer.

If you have rusted bolts, I would highly suggest having an impact driver because even with a rust catalyzer, I was unable to remove those bolts, which prohibited me to remove my old exhaust.

That being said, I will probably end up taking it to an exhaust shop to get it done because I don't own an impact driver and I am also afraid of shearing the bolts off causing me to figure out how to drill the rusted bolts out.

My car is a 2015 trail, but came from up north with snow and stuff so that's the reason for all this rust. Hopefully someone on this forum can learn something useful about my experience. I'll post pictures once I eventually get it installed.

install was easy (my bolts aren't rusted)
key if you don't want to cut the stock exhaust (granted its not seized up) is to drop the spare tire and remove the heat shield behind it.

Contrary to what people were saying, it drones around 1200-1800, its not that bad, but its there and if you are sensitive to drone you'll hate it.

Fit and finish could be better, the black tips are nice, but like was previously stated, they came scratched because of the terrible packing job.

Aside from that, i'm happy with it for the price point. Is it the nicest exhaust i've seen, no, but it was sub 500 for a stainless system with a powdercoated tailpipe/tips.

for a v6 it sounds decent, i have a TRD intake and you can't even hear the exhaust over the intake at WOT.

Are there any fitment issues with the dual side exhaust? I could install it myself, but might just have my off road shop do it when I install the lift.

No, but if you have a LIMITED, you have to extend the last factory hangar so it won't rub with the longer rear pieces on the LIMITED. Gibson lists the side dual to not fit the limited, but it does with minor adjustments.

Now, it's EASIER to install these systems starting at the rear, install tips first and work your way up to the front, ending with the muffler. This will save TIME.

Got my Gibson catback and unfortunately I'm not happy with it.

It's louder than I thought it would be and my wife already hates it. Here is a video of what it's like during normal driving conditions.

I gotta say though, I was a little disappointed with Jason. Many of my emails weren't getting answered and when I texted him (at his request), again many weren't answered. After I ordered this product, I knew it was going to be in a large package and wanted to get an idea of when it would be shipped. I didn't want this sitting on my doorstep while I'm away. After several texts (some were never answered), low and behold it arrives at my house with no notice. No shipment notification, no tracking nothing. After a couple weeks of asking when I should be expecting it, it just arrives. I had to rush home from an appt because there was no hiding this box. It literally stuck out like a sore thumb.

Now granted, Jason's pricing was good so I'll give him that. And when he did respond, he was nice enough. I even spoke to him at the very beginning. Maybe he's just busy?

You sound like the kind of person who will be unhappy and complain about EVERY exhaust system.
How many fricking times do you need to contact a seller, really. Emails and texts, multiple of each, you sound like a male version of “I need to speak to the manager.”

Really should just not comment when you don't know the whole story. It's people like you who shoot their mouths off when they shouldn't.

But since you decided to post, I'll enlighten you. I messaged Jason yes for tracking info because i never got it and I had no idea when it was supposed to arrive. Additionally, I was trying to buy more stuff from him, hence the extra email/messages.

As for your non-sense comment about not being happy about every exhaust system, what's it to you? It's my money, It's my rig. What do you care? Go about your business, nothing to see here.

Want to update everyone, these are made to order and take a bit. Will ship directly to you door from Gibson, FEDEX.

The supplied U bolts, you just have to crank the heck out of them when installing. They will work you just have to wrench them down extra hard or better yet use air tools as you can’t really hurt them.

I really wouldn't recommend the band clamps, I just called Gibson to ask production manager and he said installing band clamps on a kit that is not designed for Band Clamps – you could have issues with the pipes loosening up and coming off. To use band clamps, the pipes need indexing to accommodate the band clamp – due to that we would need to build new fitting jigs to allow them on product. And that’s a costly upgrade. There’s a Male and Female pipe to start and then the Female Pipe has 4 slots built in to aid the clamping/securing of the pipes bounding when using Band Clamps. Unless the customer is going to go to this level and make those mods to except the band clamps – he will possibly have issues down the road.

Did everyone reuse the stock exhaust gasket between the Y-Pipe and the aftermarket Gibson headpipe? The instructions did not specify to reuse the stock gasket and it looks "oversized" for the flange on the Gibson headpipe.

Yes the factory metal gasket is to be reused – no concern over size – nothing really has changed at that juncture point with the Gibson Two Bolt Flange it mirrors the factory connection – You will see that the gasket is oversized before you have your install shop or when you do it, start the removal and install and once the Gibson is installed it will look the same as was the factory.

If you look closely enough – in this image you will see the factory metal donut gasket installed on our headpipe 2 bolt flange and larger than our pipe – it’s by design.

So I had an exhaust shop install the Gibson exhaust and noticed a little rattling after breaking it in, so I had them tighten everything up because I assumed stuff loosened when it settled in overtime.

Now, a few days later there is even a worse rattle, but it is ONLY when I put the 4runner in REVERSE. Does anyone has any ideas on what this issue is or how it could be fixed?

Side note: for those looking at this system and thinking you'll gain MPGs, think again. My MPGs actually decreased. I'm overall happy with the Gibson exhaust, but I was expecting an increase in MPGs rather than decrease in MPGs.

Yes. Rear cross member. Needed to rotate the pipe a bit and tighten it down.

Snyder, it will take AT LEAST 300 miles for the computer to re-adjust for the airflow. First 1-2 tanks will be off and lower. Also, you will be testing it out and mashing the throttle more to test out your new sound, which is hard not to do :) Normal, and then after about 2 tanks, and driving normal like you always have you will see a slight bump in mileage. I know for sure 1 more mpg at least on the highway. These are more for sound, but do help a little.

The S&B air intake gives about 1 more MPG on it's own. See here with recent customer replies stating this:
