Gibson Exhaust

Had the Gibson cat back exhaust installed. Only paid $190 through Amazon, and paid $140 for the labor today. It's the Stainless steel kit. This is the 618708 kit witch is for a 2004 4.7 but it's the same as the 618707 kit besides the head pipe is shorter (the one that connects to the converter) Talking with mechanic and after some thought? We decided to put the muffler on backwards and not install the flange from the Gibson kit. It saved breaking the factory bolts lose and replacing the factory flange witch is a better design and seal than the Gibson. He welded up everything much better than just using the kits clamps.
I don't have a pic of the inside of the muffler but it has 2 large baffles on one half and shark gill type baffling all through the pipe inside, so to catch the exhaust like a parachute. Installing it backwards lets the air flow much more free the guy has been doing custom installs for 10 years and said it would sound better. He was right! Also the mechanic did not like the muffler air flow compared to a flowmaster or magnaflow. But the body of it is very well built and solid. it's not a V8 so the sound is good for what it is. (4.0)
Also decided not to turn the pipe out the side for now see if I like this.
So far I'm very happy with it and how it turned out.
Lost about 50 pounds of weight and gained allot more clearance than the factory exhaust.
Like it or not just want to share some info.

Interesting approach. Did you notice any droning inside the can? That's my worst fear. Do you have a link to where you bought it? Only one I'm finding is $360.

The $360 is the current price, I watch Amazons prices allot, when there is something I want I put it in my wish list and keep checking the price you will find the price changes every few days on most items.
There were 2 in stock when I ordered mine and right after I ordered the price shot up to $370. I ended up with this kit because of the price. I actually had planed on a Magnaflow.
I haven't had a chance to drive as much as I would like but, I don't notice a dron in the cab.
The Gibson is quiet compared to most others, but gives a bit of low end. Installing it backwards made it louder basically.
It sound pretty good when accelerating then quiets down once at cruising speed.
It's hard to capture the real sound when recording with my iPhone you just don't hear the low end as well.
I'm going to see how it goes and make changes if needed but so far so good.

BTW Do you have a picture of your car with the lift? I'm thinking about getting the same setup. I've seen your car on a snowbank, but i'm looking for a picture on level ground.

nothing changed as far as I can tell, It runs its ass off @ 3k rpm !! As far as fuel mileage Id say VERY little change, the best change in fuel milage I got was keeping my foot out of it!!

I would really like to see some different exhaust cat-back dyno results. There can be gains and drawbacks to certain exhausts and some syno results would help me make my decision

Your not gonna see any noticeable power gains with a cat-back. Exhaust systems are more for sound, not power. Toyota already grabbed as much power as you can get from these engines. You'll get much more power from a TRD sticker. I'll sell you one that adds 20hp!!

I have not noticed a loss or gain in gas milage or power give me at least a week or two and I will find out. I have heard you get about 9 more horse power out of the kit. I hope to add a AFE stage 2 that give around 10 more horse and thinking about a throttle body spacer as well, may get a few more out of that.
But I agree keeping your foot out of it is the best thing you can do for your gas milage.
My gas milage has dropped about 2 to 5 mpg with all the mods I have done.
The exhaust seems to sound good at 2500 to 4000 rpm and when on freeway at 70 it's not to noticeable my mud tires are still the noise makers.

Look in my picture album I have lots of pictures added a few more yesterday after I washed it.

I hope to have Goodyear Duratrac 285/70/17 on within the next few weeks!
The spacers I did last week really helped the look.

Over all I would say this is a very well built kit it's a bit quieter than some of the others, and even Gibson makes that claim. Reversing the flow on my muffler gave it more sound I think some may really like it and other may hate it. It's not a V8 so you have to keep that in mind I think it would sound better on the 4.7 L for sure.

I'm still thinking about putting the tip out the side I cant open the back window while driving the fumes come straight in. Also the smell was really bad at first during its first heat up but has gotten much better over one day.

The mechanic said this muffler reminds him of the design of a glass-pack but with a bunch of baffles and louvers inside to catch the exhaust. I really wish I would of taken a pic of the inside of the muffler to show everybody.

I have this same set up except not installed backwards and out the side, I'm very happy with it as well!

I haven't noticed any changes now that it's been on a while. So never noticed any MPG gains, cant say I noticed a jump in power, I think it would be to small to notice. The main things would be sound, ground clearance and some weight loss.
The only negative has be the exhaust tip has started to rust I live in Salt Lake and rust is a issue around here on all cars.
