Glasspack exhaust - 4th gen V8

So I'm about to get myself a Christmas present - a Glasspack exhaust for my V8 T4R!! That is, hopefully I am. Has anyone ever heard of doing a Glasspack on a 4R? My friend has dual Glasspack on his Tundra, and it sounds so incredibly good, and I'd like to get a similar sound.

Another question: do they have different sizes of mufflers and that type of thing? Because my friend's Tundra is LOUD and he mentioned that I could get mine to be quieter by getting a longer muffler. Is that true? Also, he runs one muffler and a Y-pipe out (I believe). What is the difference between that and two mufflers? Thanks is advance for any help yall might be able to provide.

I thought Glasspack was the brand. I had thought before that there were different brands of glasspacks, but my friend who got the glasspack on his Tundra said it was just called "Glasspack" when I asked him about it. He said it was the aftermarket exhaust or something like that. I dunno, the guy makes stuff up sometimes, so I don't really know how much of that is true. I really don't know squat about exhaust, I just wanted a deep, rumbly sound with no popping or obnoxious high-pitched sound.

Nah, glasspack is the muffler type. You've got Thrush, Cherry Bomb, Purple Hornies, etc. I put a Thrush 2.5" straight thru pipe on the wife's 4.7 Grand Cherokee and it sounds pretty damn good. She loves starting it up when she leaves work at the hospital and revs it out of her parking garage.

Glasspacks are terrible. They hurt flow too because of the contruction. The perferated internals stick out and slow down the exhaust. You want a "turbo" type muffler where the exhaust goes through as an "S", like a walker dynomax. Flowmaster is another type, but they reverberate a lot.

I went with a magnaflow cat back system that was made for the 4runner. Fits and looks great and sounds awesome. Quiet at idle or when crusing- no drone at all. But when you floor it, sounds like a V8 muscle car.

boo u got to get a nice low tone when idleing and cruising and then extreme muscle when u punch it but only for the v8's v6's need something that rumbles a bit when u punch it.... no idle noises JMO

True the Magflow and Flowmaster are better, however this setup only cost me about $20 for glasspack and hardware. :bravo: The Thrush I was fairly impressed with as it only had small perforations for the sound to be absorbed by the glass and can't see it getting blown out like the older ones.

Glass packs around here could earn you a ticket - raw and raspy sound an all. I recommend a sport muffler setup like Flowmaster, Borla or Magnflow, but it's your money, your ride.

I have a 1-in-2-out Flowmaster setup on my 2000 4.7L Tundra. It worked best with the rest of the factory system - 2 headers/CATs into the OEM resonator, into the OEM muffler...replaced OEM muffler with the 1-in-2-out Flowmaster and 2 mandrel-bent pipe sections out to the rear bumper. Sounds great, will give you some drone at exactly 2k RPM (about 62-64 mph with my gearing), sounds great at all other RPM ranges and lets out a restrained but respectable rumble at idle. Leaving the resonator in place and going the 2 into 1 into 2 route formed a virtual X-pipe setup - the pulses are in perfect stereo when you stand behind it. You'll get that classic "miss" or "skip" sound with straight-out duals without this or similar X-pipe setup - it's a natural byproduct of a typical V8's non-symmetrical firing order.

I had glass packs on a couple of my first rides back in the 1970s, never did like the sound - too raw and raspy for my ears. Was thankful when "turbo" and sport mufflers like Flowmaster, Borla and Magnaflow showed up. Quiet when you need them quiet (with an ominous but street-legal rumble), and whale like a race car when you open up the RPMs.

If you have to have the fiberglass packed mufflers, stick with a decent brand like Cherry Bomb or Thrush - and consider an x-pipe/or similar setup to even out the pulses.

See I don't know what kind of cars you were putting the glasspacks on, but they sound great with the 4.7L Toyota engine. My friend has a glasspack on his Tundra like I said, and it sounds awesome. Not raw or raspy at all. To me, those "sport" mufflers are entirely too quiet for a V8. I like my exhaust to have some sound to it, and all the Magnaflows and Borlas are all too quiet to waste my money on. Not to mention I'm going to spend about $250 out the door on this exhaust I'm getting, where the Borla would be over $1000. I just don't have that kind of money to throw around.

Really, it's just a matter of opinion. To me, the glasspack sounds great, so I'm going with it. And I am very, very excited.

Heh. I used love glasspacks on the cars I had in the 70's. They gave the sweetest sound imaginable. But these were big monster engines, 400+ Cubic inch engines ( 6.5 litre & up for you youngsters ), no catalytic converters...

Anything you're going to get these days is going to sound like an anemic sewing machine in comparison so nowdays, I'd rather the thing just be quiet.

U should try a cherry bomb vortex muffler, I have it on my 07 v6 4runner, sounds loud with the 3 inch pipes I put on. Cost me about 250 for everything.
