GM Going Down in Flames!

Toyota sells the most vehicles globally and will take over the US market in about 10 years and Honda is also making some dents in american car sales so the market is eroding for domestic vehicles every year.
Go back 20 years ago and any domestic die hard would have put their first born up that the big 3 wouldn't have ever been threatened by the Japanese market hence how the big three are having problems now. Toyota and Honda knew what they were doing.

The market is all about sales? Last I heard, you have to make a profit to stay in business. Manufacutres are in the business to make money, and stay in the business buy selling cars. Something GM has not been very good at lately. Sales numbers are a factor in the equation. Volume of sales does not does not equal profit and/or quality.

Edit: Yeah, GM will turn around, but it is going to cost them.

To make a profit, they MUST sell cars. Therefore, sales numbers are a factor in the equation. I can't think of any auto manufacturer who makes money by NOT selling cars.

Koz,

Just about everything you wrote in your last post in pure speculation. You have no way of knowing the future of the American truck market.

When it comes to full-size pickups, the biggest factor will not be reliability--it will be brand loyalty. Full-size pickup buyers are VERY brand loyal. The majority of them stick to their brand over and over again.

In fact, read this link provided by Bluto. It explains just how significant brand loyalty is to full-size truck buyers.

That is EXACTLY what was said/thought about the car market and this is exactly the thinking I'm talking about!

I remember saying "Who in their right mind would buy a cheap, plastic, little POS, with no power? I will never buy anything but GM vehicles."

Why would you say that? I don't see much flaming or sarcasm, to be quite honest.

You really want to discuss whether or not sarcasm is present in the thread? That is asinine.

I'm sorry, but I think flaming and sarcasm is HILARIOUS and is perfectly fine in a forum titled "Off-Topic."

I'm not saying that you're wrong. I'm simply saying that (1) It won't happen over night. It would take YEARS before it could even be close (2) It will not be the end of GM. They will survive.

No, I didn't want to discuss that at all. You made the comment, and it didn't make much sense to me, so I commented back

Let it die already.

You asked a question. If you don't want to discuss it, don't ask a question. Worry not, I'm done feeding your addiction to Intarwebnet debate. You're a pro at it.

My question was based upon your statement.

Since we both agree that we do not want to discuss your original statement, I agree that would should let it die.

Thanks for the compliment though!

With today's laws an loopholes in the law's and re-organization,bankruptcy, ect.......They will survive !

I'll tell you may next SUV will be a GM product.

ok , I'm just kidding ....lol I just got out of a 04 Z71 Tahoe problem child...

I just can't wait until Toyota take's over the car & truck market share.

If that ever happened it would hurt everyone. Competition is the key to the development/improvement of future products. If there were only a handful of SUVs to choose from, then there wouldn't be as much reason to make them better and better.

Lets hope even more SUVs come to market as the years pass.

GM has made more money from auto loans and mortgages than from building cars and trucks since 2002. Last year, the auto unit lost $12.9 billion and GMAC earned $2.4 billion. So, what does GM do? They're selling GMAC!

An interesting fact to keep in mind is that while the Big 3 has been divesting from it's US based manufacturing foreign manufacturers have been investing in setting up US manufacturing capabilities. Today 60% or more of Toyota/Lexus vehicles sold in the US are assembled in the US, what are the numbers for GM, Ford, DC?

Most motor manufacturers today have a worldwide assembly line strategy to save costs. Cetain components will be build in once location and used for all models worldwide, certain models will only be assembled in one location adn then exported worldwide. SO having a corporate office in one country means little to actually where the manufacturing and job creation is located.

A simple example is the Tacoma that is assembled less than 35 miles from my home, yet Dodge tried to advertise their offering as the domestic and the Tacoma as foreign on a highway less than 5 miles form the NUMMI plant where the Tacoma gets build.

I believe the Big Three were slow to change and UAW was slow to change with the times as well. Their expectations are no longer in line with the reality of what has happened in the auto world. Guess time will tell whether they can get their act together. At least with the Corvette's and Caddies they seem to be trying hard, however who needs a bigger, heavier and faster SUV/Truck when the biggest issue going forward is going to be fuel prices???

True, but remember that profits still go to Japan...therefore, i would still consider them as "foreign". Just like BMW or MB building their cars in the states...it's still foreign. That's the way i see it...i am not sure if it's right or not.
