GMC Yukon rear view mirror install

Wanted to bring the ol' 90 up to date a little.
Went to the junk yard and it turned out to be 50% off day there.
Snagged a rear view mirror from a 1997 GMC Yukon (auto dim, compass, thermometer) and the temp sensor mounted by the radiator.

size comparison:

Removed the factory mirror


popped the plastic cover back on after popping the mirror out

I literally ripped the mirror off the yukon's windshield so I had some glass stuck to the metal mounting tab. pounded it on the concrete a little to break off the glass and rubbed it on the floor like a 5 year old writing on the side walk with chalk lol


found a decent spot to mount the temp sensor



ran all the wiring. (only used 4 wires- power, ground, 2 wires to the temp sensors)

my headliner has always been a little tweaked since the roof rails started leaking and warped it a little. made running the wires up front easy. (have fixed the leak since then )
picked up the permatex mirror mount kit (glue) from autozone for 7.99 and mounted the mirror

Overall $23 bucks and a few hours working at a slow pace.
Love the new mirror with auto dim/compass/and temp gauge. :trophy:

workin with a dude on craigs to sell his spare 4.88 3rds for cheap.
 
DUUUUDE. How come I never thought of this? brilliant idea. I'm so doing this, and perhaps convince a friend to do it in his FJ40 which would be badass.
 
Very nice. I have a spiffy mirror with autodim and outside temp and such, but I don't have the sensor and I don't know what truck it came off of so I've never installed it.
 
you should, um, give it to me. haha

unless I find one in the junkyard I'll hold off but I want to do it. just not worth the $75 right now.

When I was at the junkyard.. the guy behind the counter was in a huge rush and listed the temp sensor as a misc nut & bolt. :sleep:


If you pull the mirror and sensor from a gmc yukon or a chevy tahoe & suburban..
look up front under the horn area. small sensor with two wires running to it. green and brown.
 
My cousin has a suburban that he is about to part out. I think it has the same mirror. Think I might get it from him if it is. This is a really cool idea Jonny!
 
now if you could only get the night vision system from a caddy...

LKQ has a ton of the double stack temp compass displays for sale. they're just not cheap like you'd get at junkyard.

Alright, well as soon as I figure out how to install a trigger wheel on the steering column for electronic power steering then I'll get those headlight retrofits going.
