Gobi Ladder Install Experiences

Hello,
After installing a small rack on my 2016 4runner SR5, I have learned that I'm just not tall enough to safely put items into it.
I'm looking at installing a Gobi Ladder onto the back and am seeking input from group on quality and installation experiences/considerations.

Ladders are super sweet......looking, I don't think I've ever actually used my ladder other than to get on top and take the same pic that everyone posts on here. I usually end up loading from the sides and stepping on my sliders and rear tire to load stuff up top. That's just me

I have also load the top from the sides but have found that I can't get a safe footing that way, especially when in a wet environment. Hence the question for the forum. I plan on being to load up to 100 lbs and didn't feel safe lifting while balancing on the side.

The ladder is nice, and it is a super easy install.

Gobi has horrible instruction for their ladder install.

They overly complicate the process and the way the instructions are laid out is a mess. Use the link below and install should not take you any more than 30 minutes.

As for the ladder itself, it is very stable and will definitely come in handy when loading stuff onto the roof rack.

I love my Gobi ladder. Using the instructions on this forum made it very easy to install. Although I do load from the sides most of the time, there are many occasions when I need the ladder to get the job done.

I used the ladder today to make sure our snowboards were properly stowed under the Raingler net on my Gobi Stealth rack (at the rear at least). No looseness or rattling...as if the ladder was an integral part of the rear liftgate.

Are the Gobi Struts Needed?

Thank you for the feedback! Just one more question.... Are the after market struts for the door needed to support the extra weight of the ladder? I'd rather order once if needed.

I used the stock struts for the first year, slow to open when cold but worked for awhile, probably should try it first. If you decide you need them don't get the Gobi ones...

Well Cool! I'm glad I asked the question. It has been a great learning opportunity and has helped solidify my installation plans. I'll order the ladder this week and the struts to keep on hand as a spare to allow for testing.

ive had the rack/ladder combo for over 2years and struts still ok, might be a little slower but work and dont drop even when hatch open for awhile

I'll be honest... I got the ladder for aesthetics. And to mount a rotapax gas can.

I just don't trust my weight. Either bending the ladder or part of the tailgate. :biggrin2:

I would use the side technique when loading.

I installed my gobi ladder over the weekend. I didn’t read the instructions but I did watch a diy video. It’s really simple. but I did add some tape on the lower exterior lift gate as I didn’t want to potential scratch the paint.

I have a set that came with my rack and ladder. For the first 1+ year is was good. Now it's starting to fall on its own when it's cold out. I will get around to replacing them at some point.

Yeah I rarely use mine as a ladder. It's kind of hard/awkward to climb. You can also barely get your toe on before hitting the hatch with your foot. It's not that usable, but it does look good. It's a great mount point for things.
