I just sold a wrangler JK unlimited and had a GOBI stealth roof rack on it! I have a 2012 4runner on order and hopefully it gets here sooner rather than later. I had 2 big issues with the wrangler.... 1) it was very underpowered. 2) when I put the GOBI roof rack on it made it VERY noisy even with the hard top on, and I noticed a significant drop in gas mileage. I think I could get 18-20 mpg on the highway before the rack and was lucky to get 14-15 with the rack. I'm really not a big off-roader, but want to be able to go off road if I need to. I used the rack all the time and it was great, very well made... I think I'm gonna order a GOBI for my new 4runner, but wanted to know if anyone had any issue with excessive wind noise or gas mileage issues? By the way, I did have the GOBI wind deflector on the jeep. Thanks for any replies!

Wind noise is pronounced with the Gobi- however- with the sunroof shade closed you are hard pressed to hear any noise at all. Even with the sunroof "up" noise isn't too bad. Sunroof open, lots if wind noise. I think most of it is from the lights though, and mine are small Hella FF75's.
I can still achieve 20mpg mixed driving, and 22 on trips.

Antman, thanks for the reply. I can tell you that the wind noise was awful with the GOBI on the wrangler. The wind noise was going to be more on a wrangler in the first place just cause a wrangler is just noisier, but with the roof rack it was really loud. I had to crank up the radio just to hear it at 70-75mph on the highway! It's great that it's not that bad on the 4runner, and the the fact that you still get good gas mileage is great. I'm gonna get a GOBI!!!

Not that extreme, probably a mile to a 1 1/2 less per gallon. I do quite a bit of freeway driving so I am in tune with where I was prior to the rack. I was a little surprised by that but i would have bought a car If I cared about fuel economy.
The trade off is worth it.

After 5000 miles mixed driving about 70% city 30% hwy. I was at a solid 18.5 mph. Then I installed the GOBI rack and after about 1600 miles with the GOBI installed and the same 70/30 driving I am at about 18.2 mph. Of course now it's summer and I'm running the a/c all the time.
So hopefully when this dang heat wave is over, it will pop back up.

Simple. I had a Nissan Titan. When filling up the Titan's tank was costing me close to 100 bucks, I learned to change my driving habits- with the help of a Scanguage. It was hard to get 13-14 mpg with the Titan...I managed 15.2 on a trip to South Carolina once...what a beast.
Enter the 4Runner.
Honestly I was getting 15 MPG before my Airbox MOD :lmao: Shame on you if you believe that.
Seriously- I keep the green ECO light on as much as possible and make a game out of it. Easy on the gas at all times! I also drive 35 mins to work on the interstate at 3:30 am- no traffic, so that helps.
If I tow my boat, the average will drop to 17-18, but I usually get 400+ per tank! No B/S.
Drive a big thirsty truck for a few months and you will learn to drive like a sissy too...
