Gobi with Yakima Bike/Kayak Mounts?

Let me apologize in advance if this message rambles from the point. I'm on some pretty hefty cold meds, and I'm finding that my concentration is lacking a WEE bit tonight.

My wife and I had a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport (208,000 miles) that we just gave to my niece as a birthday present for her 16th birthday. We've always had Yakima racks on every vehicle we've owned, including the Jeep. We've got kayak and bike racks, hardware, etc., that all fits on Yakima setups. Our kayak setup is still fairly new (in good shape), while the bike components are due for replacement... or so says the duct tape holding some of it together.

I've looked at the Gobi setup, and it looks like it has tubing similar to a Yakima setup, but it isn't moveable. Would it be possible to mount our Yakima gear onto a Gobi rack? Do they sell additional support bars that could be mounted to act like another crossbeam for a Yakima mounting setup?

I like the idea of a Gobi rack because it looks like it has a "shelf" that you can use for storage... and then strap everything down good and tight. That'd be nice because it wouldn't cause us to have as much wasted space.

Is mixing these two systems possible, or should I stay with a straight Yakima setup? I have no grand illusions of turning my LE into a TE or taking it on some of the grand off-road adventures that some of y'all take... but I'd like to have a setup with some versatility in the future.

Gobi will Custom Build your Rack

Whatever you need. Yes the rack will fit on the Gobi. Measure out your distance and let them know.

If you don't already own a gobi, I would recommend having it built without the rear crossbar. This will allowing "floor" space that is uninterrupted. Then you could purchase a rack system from either Thule or Yakima that clamps to the rails. This will allow you to adjust the distance between the rails for your accessory of choice.

Everything works on the gobi.

What you could do is, yakima makes additional cross bars for the loadwarrior and megawarrior. Not sure if they'll fit width wise, but you can always cut it down and drill a hole for the hardware, if you need another bar.

Yakima kayak mounts with Gobi Stealth

Hey guys,

How high does the front bar come up from the roof? My goal is to sell Trail rack and MegaWarrior to buy a Stealth but I am concerned my kayak will be nose high because it is so long and that front bar might be higher than the Yakima mount.
