going for one 881/906 lift pretty soon

I think the problem is that he recently put these on the truck. They can be a little stiff while they break in. After about 1,000 miles or so I think he'll like the ride better.
I've got 6 years and 60,000 miles that's says otherwise.

I've got about 5,000 miles on 4R 5100's and 880/906's. I think it rides great. I'm sure it could be better at smoothing out some of the bumps that I encounter but it's also a live rear axle, 16 year old truck. I don't think it's ever going to ride like a caddy without putting considerably more cash into it.

The cost for 5100's and OME springs is what, maybe $500? You can't even get a Front left Icon C/O for that.

People expecting a budget shock/spring lift to both raise the truck and ride like remote reservoir adjustable dampening fox racing shocks are expecting just a bit too much, IMHO. For what it is, it's not bad at all and it's super fun over big speed bumps around NOVA.

906

I have the 906 and 880 with 5100s. A few notes.

Over speed bumps the truck really goes from side to side, it's not hard, but you definitely feel it. I always thought it was more a function of having a rear axle, not so much the springs.

I think they are stiffer than whatever the hell I had in there before, but honestly not much. It also doesn't take that much to soften them up. Sometimes I have like MAYBE 150 - 200 lbs of tools in the back and you definitely feel more of a "dip" over bumps.

You definitely have a good 1 inch rake with the 880s. This should keep it balanced when you load it down, but it doesn't really have that "Lifted Truck" look, especially once you go 265/75/16

From a LOOKS perspective, I probably wish I had gone 890/881, but I also still have a decent amount of roll in a corner during normal driving, I wonder if the softer springs would make it worse.

Overall I'm happy with the setup. I think if I changed it, I wouldn't get taller OME springs, I'd just get an entire higher-end suspension system, like KING or ICON.

For the money. I think it was a great buy. Truck looks awesome.

Last post in this thread for me, but I thought the same thing for the last 6 years. I thought you'd never get a "plush" ride without throwing down some $. Well, 890s have proved me wrong. They're plush. My rear end feels like a Cadillac now. I've also replaced my 881 and 5100 front setup with a pair of kings. Front feels controlled, but not as soft as rear now.

I had 906's for about 10,000 miles on my '99. They only lifted it about 1" and the ride was pretty harsh compared to stock. Nothing you can't live with, but I ended up swapping to land cruiser springs.

On washboard roads with the 906's, the rear end would bounce and skip everywhere. I actually lost control coming around a corner on a dirt road when I hit a pothole and the rear end skipped sideways (might have been going a little fast..) I ended up nose first in the ditch and trashed my light bar mounts and bumper. But on the bright side that prompted me to buy a CBI front bumper!

my current suspension is awful, hitting speed bumps or bumps in road my head nearly hits the ceiling, rear end doesn't really bounce, but it does skip a little. it feels like a hardtail bicycle on a DH course, not soaking up any bumps. sucks

do 890 require pan hard drop?

I already have 906 sitting in garage. How much higher would 890 be in comparison?

I could sell the 906 and go with 890 instead. I thought people where happy with the 4Runner 5100 and 906 pair.

Thanks for the heads up on the front shocks not including bushings!
No prob!
I think most people ARE happy with them, because they got them to carry extra weight, with minimal lift. With 300lbs extra weight(what they are advertised to be designed for), I'll bet they ride pretty darn good. But "good" doesn't mean soft.
The 890 is only advertised to give 1/4" more lift, with quite a bit lower spring rate(190 vs the 220lb 906).

Yeah, $350 for 5100's and coils. Super affordable.
I'm not sure anyone here is expecting remote-res-dual-adjustable-performance out of their 5100's- of course that would be expecting too much.
Having my 4Runner ride like a Caddy would be absolutely devastating. I can say that I rode in my buddy's 3rd gen with a $9k Total Chaos front end, and THAT rode like a TANK. That's the bottom line of all this- people have such different opinions about what feels "good" or "right" to them. Expensive/high quality does not mean comfortable. Can it be? Of course.

Maybe you should elaborate on this. What do you mean by "Damn thing skips all over the place"?

Sorry for the previous blurt out post....I was feeling no pain nor ability to communicate very well in any manner at that time.

So far with my 4runner 5100/906 rears they noticeably will (skitter..is that a word?) on washboard and sharp edged frost heaved pavement. The rear end will start to walk and then catch on the washboard much quicker and at lower speeds. On the pavement it is rough, and the rig will move enough to require corrective steering. My wife rode in it one trip and said "WTF??? what are you doing that for?" and some other words directing blame towards me. Her blaming me for driving like an idiot is totally baseless I assure you. On smooth dirt and pavement they ride good to great.

I base this compared my last two 2nd Gen's and the other vehicles I drive on the same roads. 1/2-1 Ton PU's both loaded and empty.

I just think the rig is super light and that combo so far does not have much give on the initial impact. Maybe it will get better with more miles and off road driving. The snow is finally melting so I will get some more rough road driving in.

It is so hard to know what you want without trying things out yourself. That is just not an option for me so I will live with mine and hope they soften up a little. I got the lift I wanted, Bilstein shocks are quality, (Their customer service sucks balls!) and the springs are quality.

Some advice.

If you're not carrying much weight, go for the 891 rear coils and not the 906's. I've heard it's very stiff if you're not carrying at least 300 lbs.

I recently installed the 891's and love them. Stiffer than stock but it feels great! Also running the 881's on the front and couldn't be happier! Let me know if you have any questions let me know!

I've just bought a pair of 890 OMEs for the rear of my 96 Hilux Surf (JDM 4runner).

I did choose them as I wanted the softest ride of the OME options - according to google they have a 190 lb/in spring rate as opposed to 220 for 906's and 210 for 891's.

But in terms of spring rate difference 30 lb/in is very small and I wouldn't expect to be able to tell the difference between them even with what I'm guessing is a pretty high motion ratio in the back of 3rd gens. I think the shocks will be by far the overwhelming factor in ride quality.

The springs look progressive too (well more like two spring rates really) - they have some tightly spaced coils that will be coil-bound after a couple of inches of compression (if they're not at static height), at which point the remaining coils will be much stiffer. If the various options are different in their progressive characteristics that might make more of a difference to ride quality.

Are you using the 4Runner specific 5100s and if so which perch on the front? I installed them on a 99 4runner at the lowest perch and there's a 1/2" gap between the top hat and strut rod nut, causing a bad clunk over bumps. Bilstein says this combo isnt recommended but Im thinking if I move it to the top perch it will be fine?

Same combo here. Love the rears but the fronts I have issues with, mentioned above. Which perch are you running on the front with the 880s?

I've ran 881s and 906s with Tundra rear 5100s for the past 5,000 miles. I will be installing a set of 890s here this weekend. The 906s aren't bad, but are definitely too harsh for my liking.
