So I just talked with LCE. Tony gave me a few options to consider. I have been doing a lot of reading and I am still reading about the labor involved, parts need, etc. I am considering attempting this myself. I've never torn an engine apart; the most technical wrenching I have done was installing the Spartan locker and I had someone help who knew what he was doing. I am not positive I will have the same type of help this time, so I'll probably end up by myself. A shop quoted me $750 for labor. I would supply the parts.
The first two are just plain stock options. New head ($400), new cam ($150 and I'm not sure if I *need* to replace or not), plus a gasket kit (~$130), and ARP head studs ($154).
The next option was of course the fully loaded badass fully built head ($1K)

What is everyone's opinion? Keep in mind I still need to have a shop fix my diff and a few other things at about $2K with parts and labor (without head work). Same shop would do the work on the diff and engine.

So all you want to do is swap out the head? Easy DIY stuff.

I have read that the engnbldr street head is pretty dang close to the lce one. It's cheaper and I always hear good reviews from them.

I've decided not to buy a new head. I bought a whole new to me 22RE instead. Gonna swap the head off the spare motor and put it on mine. Already have plans for the spare motor :flamethrwoer2:

If you can change your brakes, you can swap the head. The big secret is to take lots pictures and tag EVERY vacuum hose and harness connector and tag and bag every bolt and nut. Do you have a copy of the FSM? You'll need it for the removal sequence on the head bolts, and the torque settings when you replace them. Make sure the block mating surface is super clean, use compressed air to blow out the passages, use a straight edge to make sure it's level, if the head you're using is used take it to a machine shop to get checked out first. If they deck it, make sure they tell you how much so you can order a thicker head gasket. When's the last time the timing chain and water pump were replaced on your truck? If you don't know, now is a perfect time to do that too.

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded a copy of it from this site and I read through the procedure. I can tackle this, I just need the time to do it. I plan on replacing all the vacuum lines because I also know I have a leak in one I cannot for the life of me find (my 22RE isn't exactly quite).
I graduate in December then it is off to Wyoming for a week to play in the snow. I won't have time to swap the head until the end of December/beginning of January.
Good idea on the timing chain as well. I have been looking at the dual row kit but I don't know much about it or a reputable place to order one from. I got a new pump from AutoZone, but I think I am going to return that and get an AISIN one. It's only $20 more and I like OEM parts.

The transmission has been pulled out for about 2 months now but I have not had any spare cash to buy a new clutch. I got a better paying job a few weeks ago so I plan to have the truck back together by the end of the year.
