Good news for the tranny lag..new tsb fixes!

I had my 4Runner at the dealer service dept. yesterday to have the 0166-10 SB flashed and to finally have my remote start installed that they owed me since new.

The tech told me the SB flash was the same as what I had and that no DTC's existed in the ECU when the OBD-II was hooked up so everything was normal.My last 5 digits of my VIN are 03094.

The only time I ever noticed mine is when I was backing out of a parking space and then shifted to drive. Feels like it can't decide between 1st and 2nd gear and paused for a second. It has gotten better and I barely notice it now.He said these trannies learn our driving habits and adapt over time.He wrote up a report on the hesitation complaint and I questioned if the SB causes it.He didn't know and I was the first he heard of and didn't have access to the original flash.

Do people that have early 4runners built before the 02648 VIN have this hesitation?

Speaking of the tranny adapt thing...I was thinking that some of the folks who demanded an ecu reflash and weren't eligible for the tsb were getting a simple reboot and that's what they're noticing. Then the next problem might be the lag reappears after awhile.
I didn't notice lag until I drove around the walmart pkg lot one night looking for a space.
I also think the lag and hard shifting are related.
Does cruise control affect anyone's lag? This is the first CC I've had that actually downshifts to slow the car.

I have a very early TE before the VIN cut off and I notice the hesitation at low speeds. It is most pronounce when making slow turns and pulling out of the turn.

I have yet to schedule the service appointment that I'm hoping will fix it. The HARD SHIFT and TRANNY LAG IMHO are the same thing. Sometimes it feels like a hard shift, sometimes it feels like a tranny lag. Sometimes it feels like a rocket booster is revving the engine so my trip to the moon will be quicker.

Regardless, same thing.

Bigger problem is the doggam rattling sunroof. I can't hear myself think! At least it isn't leaking... yet.

He thinks you were making an inside joke about the Lowest VIN # thread, instead of referring to the cutoff VINs in the TSB.

Taking mine to the dealer on Friday for oil change/tire rotation and TSB fix. I'll let you know what I find out.

When I notice the lag I back off so as to avoid a 'hard shift', I let the system settle and pick a gear, however I'm sure there are a lot of :lookout: out there that just keep the gas down, engine reving, not backing off, until it shifts, resulting in a 'hard shift' at higher rpm's. I'm curious how many of your feather the gas with the lag? Has anyone just held it when it revs to see what happens (hard shift?) I like my tranny so I try to avoid that, but just curious!

You got it. It basically shifts hard if you stay on the gas, and tranny lags if you feather it and let it search for the gear. Then there's the 3rd random rocket to the moon thing where you first feather it then get on the gas and when it finally downshifts you rocket ahead like an ssahole in traffic.

I don't know if I'm experiencing the same thing you are, but when I shift in to 'Drive' from 'Park' or 'Reverse', there is an obvious lunge when it shifts into 'Drive'. I guess it's kind of a pause, but right after the pause you know it has engaged 'Drive'.

What I'm comparing this to is my Dad's 08 Silverado. When I shift into 'Drive' in his truck, I can't even tell that it shifted. For example, the other day I moved his truck. Backed out of the driveway and shifted into 'Drive'. I waited there for about 10 seconds for a lunge that never happened, but it was already in 'Drive'. The shift into 'Drive' in the Silverado is seamless. I realize they're two totally different vehicles, but it's just weird to a lunge (for a lack of a better description) when shifting in the 4R - not that it's dangerous, just weird.

Anyways, I do experience the hard shift/lag - my last 5 digits are 00962. 4funnr and westwind are spot on with the description!

Had my 5000 mile service done ($68, including full synthetic oil) and told them about my tranny lag. They recalibrated it, even tho' my VIN # was not included in the bulletin. It is defineately a noticeble improvement. Oh, and I recieved the new warranty and maintenance guide with a letter stating that the 2010 4R's are the first "new model Toyotas" that should run the 0W-20 full synthetic oil. And the change interval is now every 10,000 miles.

My VIN is in the 5-thousands, but I still notice strange things with the tranny too. Does anyone feel any kind of shudder/weak vibration when it shifts from first to second? It's most noticeable when not giving it too much gas.

Good evening,

New member here with a TE that landed within the TSB VIN range. Our symptoms were a hard shift from 2nd to 1st when slowing, but not coming to a complete stop, then trying to smoothly accelerate again. This was most pronounced during a right hand turn most likely due to the speed.

The TSB completely fixed the problem for us. The transmissions shifts very smooth under all driving conditions.

Mine came off the boat Dec 31st 2009. My dealer had me bring it in. He confirmed the problem but the fix is not for trucks within my VIN range. He said another TSB may come out soon.

Here's all the info regarding my fix yesterday (BTW, I was at the dealer for over three hours for oil change, tire rotation and TSB - not happy at all with that type of wait).

My VIN is ###1072
Since day one, I had the abnormal downshift when making turns while moving slow as well as the hard shift/stutter shift between 1st and 2nd gear. Also, I had the tranny lag where it seems like an eternity for the transmission to determine to downshift - and if I try to force the downshift by pressing harder on the gas, it chooses a very low gear instead of going just one gear lower.


This is what my invoice says:
Customer states: Check for open TSB's for abnormal downshift when making turns.
Tech found an open service bulletin for updating the E.C.M.
Tech performed the open bulletin

After driving for the rest of the day yesterday, the abnormal downshift and stutter shift has completely dissappeared and shifts are smooth. It also feels like I'm getting a little better performance from a stop to start. Very happy with the results. However, the tranny lag is still there. Therefore, my opinion is, the TSB fix will not "create" tranny lag or "fix" tranny lag. I would definitely recommend going to the dealer to have this performed regardless of the tranny lag issue.

Now I'd like to talk about the three-hour wait. Anytime I've ever gone for an oil change at a dealer, the longest I waited was under an hour. I understand it was a Friday, however if you have a 1:30 pm appointment, and they call the day before the appointment to confirm, I cannot understand why they needed over three hours! Wasted my entire afternoon. Also, after the two hour mark, I asked the service person when they thought it would be done. He looked up my name, walked to the service area, came back and said "he's just finishing up." Still had to wait over an hour after he said this.

I still think the lag issue needs to addressed, in spite of what anyone says, it's not "normal".

As far as the wait at the stealership, if you had an appointment I would write the Service Manager, if he doesn't make it right for you ( I would say at least a free oil change) then I would write the Business Manager or owner and CC the Service Manager, and explain the circumstances. If that doesn't get you any satisfaction, take your business to next local dealer.
