Anyone else smell a rubbery smell round the rear wheel wells when they stop somewhere? On both my runners I do, dunno if its normal or not?
Its a faint rubber smell like something made of it is hot.

Yeah, its not like super strong, but if you duck down near the rear wheel well, you may be able to smell it. Usually after climbing a hill or something helps.

I've had that smell on almost every vehicle I've owned. I always assumed it was just the heast from the tires.

Well, I have can smell a fly fart from 10 feet away and I can't say that I am smelling this.

However, this is not to say that I won't soon. My New rig only has 348 miles on her.

I smell it - I think it might be the rubber thing that the exhaust hangs off getting a little warm- seems to be stronger over that side.

I smell something, but I think what I am smelling is the rear disk brakes. A lot of heat coming from those after stopping!

Yeah, I smell it also. I asked about it in another thread some time ago. I think it is the ceramic brakes. When I pull into the garage I can really smell it. It seems like the drivers side more than the passenger side.

It's just another undisclosed benefit I guess.

I get a similar smell off my '90 and a few friends here locally have noticed it too on their 'Runners (ranging from '87 to '96). We get almost a burnt clutch smell. We just figured it to be the catalytic converter. Mine does not always make the smell, and it dissapates quickly, not like when you slip the clutch too much under load and the truck stinks for the rest of the day.

brake pads and burnt rubber, if you don't smell it your tires would never wear and the brakes would last forever:arrow:

It's more likely that you smell it cause most people live in suburban areas, stops signs, slow speeds applying the brakes, left and right turns,

I think we have a winner here! Yeah, good thinking, I believe thats it. Damn, why did I not think of that? Ceramic pads, nah, good thinking, and yes brakes to smell, but this is worse after going up a mountain, when the exhaust is hot, and even more dominant when you tow up a mountain. I will go wiht the hangars giving up the smell. thanks guys.
