Goodbye 3rd Gen. Hello 4th Gen!

Today I took delivery of a 2008 4WD V6 UrbanRunner in black. Only 58K miles! I am selling my 1999 4WD V6 Limited with 225K miles. Here in Denver 4WD 4Runners get top dollar, so I did a nationwide search and found this is Wyoming, for much less $ than it would have been locally.

I have attached a jpeg, but not sure if I did it right.

Needless to say, I am stoked on the new ride and excited to learn all of its little tricks and maybe make a couple of cosmetic changes.

Here are some questions so far:

Is the silly looking antenna stuck to the top left inside of the windshield for the TomTom? If I replace that stereo with a non-navigation unit, can I pull that thing out?
Speaking of the stereo, while listening to the radio, it sounds like the driver's side speaker(s) is cutting out, then coming back. Is that something that happens when the stereo partially loses, then regains reception? Or do I have a loose connection or a bad speaker?

The alarm on my 1999 made an electronic beep when it turns on, beep-beep when it goes off. This one uses a horn blast. Is that normal?

Should the amber lights next to the headlights always be on? (On the front of the car, not the dashboard.) Even when the headlights are off? Is this some sort of daytime running light safety thing?

Anyone have opinions on clear bra? What kind is best?

For rubber floor mats, are there any better ones than the ones made by Toyota?

I am thinking of adding wheel spacers. What size have people gone with? Do they work with a one-size-bigger tire, or is that asking for major rubbing?

I am sure these issues are dealt with in other threads, and I will search them all in time.

Nice find. Great looking truck and really low miles. I'd still look over all the rubber components carefully as age treats them just as bad as heat and mileage.

Here are some questions so far:

When I set the automatic climate control temperature to Low, the A/C turns on and the fan goes up high. If I turn it up one click, to 65, the A/C goes off and it blows warm air, and the fan drops to level two. Is that how it is supposed to work? Yep, normal. On Auto set to LOW, the computer is trying to cool the truck down to LOW, so it'll go on full blast until temp is reached.

Should the amber lights that are in the same cluster as the headlights always be on? Even when the headlights are off? Is this some sort of daytime running light safety thing? Dash is always illuminated unless you turn it down with the knob. Took me awhile to get used to it. Just live with the constant orange glow. Or change it over with LED swap if you're inclined.


For rubber floor mats, are there any better ones than the ones made by Toyota? Weathertech or Husky. I have Weathertech's. There's usually a group buy in this or other Toyota forums you can jump in to save a few bucks.

I also came from a 3rd gen and think the climate control on the 4th gens is terrible. My chief complaints are; not being able to see what the temp setting is unless the fan is turned on (ie, no red/blue dial indicator), the outside air/recirc setting has a mind of its own and constantly changes position all by itself even when everything else is off, it takes too long to change the temp setting from one extreme to the other.

Yes, the amber light is the daytime running light. Any dealer can turn that off with their computer in about 2 mins. There's even a TSB telling them how to do it. They normally do that for free.

Go to Weathertech or Husky for better floor mats.
