Gosh awful smell in cabin...

My wife has a 2011 4runner .. almost 70k miles.. never had a issue with it.. but.. 2 weeks ago she filled up at a different gas station than she normally uses.. and this smell started.. I can be driving down the highway.. cruise set on 65.. when we reach a hill and the passing gear kicks in to maintain the set speed... the cabin will fill with the gosh awfulist smell in the world... it smells exactly like a perm that women put in their hair.... after a short distance it goes away.. you might drive for 15 miles no issues..until you hit passing gear again.. and here it comes.. I swear its the gas.. but cant imagine how something coming from the tail pipe can enter the cabin.. we re fueled yesterday at a different location and the smell is no longer there..?? any ideas?? thanks!!

finally drove with the back window down huh?
 
I had an awful smell for a while, every time I went over 3500 rpm accelerating. Dealer service spilled oil on engine, I haven't had it happen since cleaned oil off.
 
That smell is likely your own exhaust. When you punched the accelerator, fumes from your exhaust pipe got into the cabin e.g., through a window, a vent, hvac fresh air duct... The next time you're on the highway conduct some tests "with the outdoor air sources all closed" and let us know what you discover, Rgds!

If you think that's a gosh awfulist smell, don't go to Yellowstone National Park. It's the smell of sulfur from your exhaust.
 
I sometimes get a unpleasant smell in the cabin, but it always has to do with the AC coming back on. You sure it's not that?

If the back window wasn't down, I would also check the cabin filter. if you have a standard one try the charcoal, IMHO they are worth the extra cost.

But the Antman explanation could be plausible I guess. :whistle:

What?! I asked the parts guy for a charcoal filter and he said they don't make one for the 4th gen.

I mean I have had a couple beers already today but I'm fairly certain this is the 5th gen section? There are regular and carbon filters for the 5th gen cabin, I ordered online for a very reasonable price. Having compared the charcoal its worth the cost. I'll have to hunt around for where I ordered from... And the growler is still mostly full so no promises. :lol:
 
Our 2010 used to do the same thing, is it a Limited by chance? Used to only do it while under hard acceleration like merging on to the highway. I just chalked it up the cataylic converter, smelled like sulfur for a brief minute.
