A friend of mine who's got Land Rover Freelancer(Free lander?, not sure...don't give a sh*t) proudly claimed that my t4r can't go offroad cuz it's toyota. only Land Rovers can do that, he said.

i'll admit that Land Rovers got the name recognition, but if you look at any car review rags, its rating usually filled with black-dots - meaning you better have a good relationship with your dealer, HA!

Which got me thinking, though. Among the major players in the mid-sized SUVs, how is t4r ranked in terms of off-road capability? Maybe Land Rovers might do better offroad but i reckon T4Rs are not far behind...

Talk is cheap. Both of you should go offroad and see who doesn't need to be towed out of the muck. Bring a camera for proof should you need to tow his Roll Over home. :)

Tell this guy if he wants to brag about the off-road capabilities of a Land Rover that he needs to buy an LR3 or Range Rover first. The only people I see driving freelanders are rich daddy's girls.

No way this thing can outwheel a 4Runner, its in the same class as CRV, RAV4, etc. They are all soft-roaders.

I was watching a Top Gear episode where they took the brand new LR3 to the top of some mountain in Scotland. The only mods were all-terraiin tires and a winch, and it got stuck twice. I recall sitting there thinking, I guarantee you my 4Runner could do just as well...

But YOU should PROVE it to him.
 
Show your "friend" all the off-roading photos posted here on this website. Otherwise, as others have suggested, the best way to show him is to prove it to him, first hand. I'd be more than happy to go off-roading with this guy.

Come to think of it, I have yet to see a guy behind the wheel of a freelander. I have seen a few on the road and they were all driven by chicks. Based on this observation, you can now officially call your "friend" metrosexual as he drives his pavement princess.
 
3rd gens with a rear diff lock are one of the most off road capable SUVs in true showroom trim and I'd put mine up against a stock Range Rover anyday.
 
Your friend is comparing apples to oranges. The 4runner is in a different class altogether compared to the freelander. The 4runner is heavier, bigger engine, more torque, just beefier overall.
 
The last time we (some of the Northeast Members) went to Paragon we had a Freelander in our group. The Freelander's driver spent most of the time looking under his vehicle trying to figure out if the HORRIABLE noises that were coming from under his vehicle, when it past over most obstacles, were doing any damage. Not to mention the running boards that were trashed. I followed him through most of the trails and heard some very disturbing sounds that were so loud it sounded like it was coming from my vehicle. The funny part was when some people in the group would compliment him on the Freelander getting through some of the more difficult obstacles, he would say I'm not sure about how well I'm doing.

I can't argue with you, but I believe that a well-driven stock Range Rover is tough to beat off-road because of its superior wheel travel and articulation. Without checking, I believe it has one of the highest ramp-travel indices of any SUV (pre- 2007 Rubicon).

As proud and passionate Toyota/4runner owners, it is our duty to inform these ignorant people that our machines are well capable of what they are designed to be and do. Not to mention to make the nay sayers out there eat their own words.

Neowig, please be as kind as to direct your friend's ignorant @ss to this thread. I agree with ksneubec, pictures speak a thousand words.

Exactly.....a POS Freelander is a far cry from an old Defender that was actually 1/2 decent off-road.

The best part is....I bet your friend has never even driven it off-road lol

The message I responded to and quoted from RonMaiden specifically mentioned a Range Rover. I figured he may have brought it up because I ranked it ahead of the T4R in my list a few posts back in this thread.

Neowig mentioned the Freelander, but he also asked how the T4R ranks against other mid-sized SUVs in off-road prowess.

I don't see the Lexus' better and you definitely need to re-think the GC HEEP. The Freelander is better off-road. I also think the Xterra may be a better bang for the buck but I
