Grease Fittings on 4Runner??

The sales rep at Toyota said that the 2005 4Runner (V6 SR5) does not have serviceable grease fittings. Most cars made in the last fifteen years do not, either.

However, someone here has said that they do have them. Do they or not? If so, where are they located on the '05 model? Do some have them and others don't......or what?

Well your dealer is full of Sh_t. My corolla has none but both my Jeep & T4R have them. On the 2003 runner they are on both drive shafts. Craw under there and take a look.

Only on the driveshafts and nowhere else? None on the suspension, I assume.

That's correct no ball joints or any other suspension parts. Look at all the U-joints and slip yokes for the Zerk fittings. You may also need to rotate the shafts a bit to expose them all. It helps to have a flexible hose on the end of the grease gun.

Thanks for the tip. I better be sure to get to those fittings ASAP. My SR5 is one year old and just turned 10k miles. Heck, I have already changed the oil three times now! I have not seen any passenger vehicle made in the last fifteen years (aside from full-size, heavy-duty pickup trucks) that has grease fittings.

So you say there is only one zerk on each driveshaft and that is it? None on the U-joints, right?

Always laugh my ass off when the service writers are so sure of something that does not need to be done on a vehicle that needs it

Their should be 3 on the front shaft and 3 on the rear shaft, at least I only got the 6 greased.

Im pretty sure nothin has grease fittings anymore except for the driveshafts on 4wd/AWD vehicles: still always good to check cause it's amazing what the people working on the cars daily don't know is their

6 total. One on the spider at the end of each driveshaft=4. Then one on each driveshaft for the slip-yoke. That's on a V8. Can't imagine why it would be any different on a V6 4X4.

JB, you are correct. V6 is same as V8 in this regard.

Some of the repair manuals mention additional zerks on the "double cardan" joint, and include drawings of the joint. However the 4th generation 4Runners no longer have this joint.

That's a fair question. Some of us assume too often that all these 4Runners are 4WD.

Unless I misunderstand things the 2WD versions will have 3 zerks. One at each end of the shaft, in the center of the spider, to lube the Hooke joint. One near the front joint, to lube the slip joint.

I think this discussion has happened in the past, and as I remember, the 2WD units do not have any zerks in the drive shaft U-joints.

I have a 2001 two wheel drive 4runner that I just recently started changing the oil in rather than taking it to a shop. I was wondering, are there any grease zerks in this model that I need to top off? If so, where would I find them on the undercarriage?

I literally asked the " service advisor" at Toyota the other day if greasing the drive shaft was part of the service when getting oil changed. He said no , just tightening the bolts was necessary. I couldnt believe it !.

You have a 3rd Gen T4R, you have posted in the 4th Gen forum section, while there maybe someone in this section that had or does own a 3rd Gen who can positively answer your question you would most likely have much better luck posting in the 3rd Gen forum where current 3rd Gen owners will see your question.

That being said basically any moving part on the under carriage, bearings, pivot points, swivel points, etc. can possibly have a zerk fitting that needs periodical greasing, best way to find them is get under there and look for them.
