Greasing the drive shaft

I have some questions. From what I gathered from this thread

What I need are 2 kinds of grease one lithium grease and one lithium grease with molybdenum disulphide.


Do I need 2 grease guns then? I can pick these up at walmart or autozone? Other than that it seems pretty straight forward. I hope it does improve the drive line clunk. If you anyone has any additional tips or info please chime in.

No additional info. You are correct. 2 guns 2 different tubes of grease unless you want to buy one grease gun and put a tube in for like 6 pumps then pull the tube out and purge it with the other grease. Not a fun time.
 
Good timing on this thread... its been on my to-do list for a while but I haven't researched it yet...

I was looking at my zerks last night when I was doing my brakes... some of those things are in some pretty cramped areas.

I might need to look into some better fittings. My existing grease gun isn't looking so great...

Being the stickler for following the factory recommendations, I will probably get the two different greases that are called out in the service manual, but I am sure that using one grease across the board isn't really a problem if its a good grease. I bet it happens a lot more than you think when you take a car in for service somewhere.

two grease guns . the reason to use moly is because the grease will not blow out much and will stick in the slip yokes longer then just lithium .

on slip yoke do 1/2 pumps until you feel some back pressure then stop . probably 2 -4 half pumps slow not hard pumping..

on the U joints pump lithium grease till it comes out then wipe it all down ..

clunk on stop then start is the binding yokes common on all trucks.
 
My drive-line isn't very noisy or clunky... Perhaps I should just leave it alone...

That said, I have no idea when the last time it was serviced, or if its ever been done.
 
Two guns... I was using the stuff without moly for awhile and noticed that I had to grease it every couple of weeks. Dropped the drive line, cleaned out all the splines then used the correct stuff and can go months now with out having to grease it. It also helped that I cleaned up the slip yoke with some emery cloth.

There's a reason the engineers recommend two types of grease and its not just about making money off customers... I've slowly learned, by trial and error, that they just might be smarter that me...

I use non-moly grease for both, and it works fine, but moly grease in the appropriate areas would be better. I usually grease them about once every oil change.

in another thread they were talking about using 2 different kinds of greases and i forget who said it but someone said they ended up taking that part of the owners manual in the later years? that one type of grease is ok, and seems like everyone was using the mobile 1 pinkish/redish grease, I'm going to grease up everything this sunday.

The whole "never mix grease of different types" is very valid. But, what thye are talking about is mixing grease containing a LITHIUM soap with a grease containing a SODIUM soap. I haven't seen a sodium soap based grease in more than 20 years (at least). Everything I have seen in recent times is lithium soap based.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), or "moly" for short, is an outstanding dry-film lubricant. It has a coeffecient of friction nearly identical to (or sometimes better than) Teflon, WHITHOUT all of the problems associated with Teflon (and there are so many with Teflon that it would take a near encyclopedia sized post to even begin discussing it). Moly also works VERY well as an extreme pressure lubricant (something Teflon can't do), and so is added to "EP", or Extreme Pressure greases. The problem is that nearly all EP greases are for LOW SPEED applications. This means they function well on things like pivot points and such (most zerks on a mower), but function rather poorly on high speed items, like spindles or wheel bearings on cars. By the same token, multi-purpose greases usually perform well with higher speed uses, but fail to give extreme pressure performance in low speed applications.

Personally, I have found ONE grease that is truly a "one grease for everything". It even exceeds the Ford specification for wheel bearings on disk brake equipped cars (Ford M1C75B) WITHOUT the addition of molybdenum. This is quite a task, and is the only grease in the world (that I know of) that can do this. It works outstanding at low and high temperatures, under extreme pressure applications, low and high speeds, etc. This grease is Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease.

Once my currently used grease runs out (and it is about out), I will be switching to the Amsoil Series 2000 grease. While not an Amsoil representative or affiliate, I do highly recommend this product.

I believe Amsoils leaves the moly out of the wheel bearing grease because of its affinity to hold heat. As you said Woody, thats better suited for high load low speed uses. U-joints, Fifth wheels, slack adjusters. I use the 2000 racing grease also,good grease for trimmer heads. Good resistance to wash out, too.

Mucho Thanks for all the input guys!!! I had purchased some "Slick 50 One Grease" and was having second thoughts about using it for everything. I feel much more comfortable about using it now.

Woody: I appreciate the depth of your reply. You, obviously, do a fair amount of research. The Slick 50 I have is supposed to meet or exceed all requirements for #2 NLGI Service Classification GC-LB. I think it will be worth trying. Good luck to you with the Amsoil Series 2000!

Anyhow, anything that meets Ford M1C75B will prevent wear on the spindle bearings in a big way, and will be more than adequate for all pivot points as well.

I use the redline CV-2 grease for u-joints and slip shafts.
But then again I like to live on the wild side :guitar3: lol
 
I use one type also, Royal Purple Ultra Performance Grease.
2 pumps from a full size grease gun to the zerks every oil change for me.
So far so good.

IMO...Your making a simple grease job way too complicated. I strongly suggest you get a high quality Marine Grease and be done with it. There is a difference in the Marine Grease in how it reacts to temp, water, and cold....yes its a tiny bit more expensive...but well worth it. I use Amzoil...in everything except high volume constant fill/re-grease stuff like equipment. In those standard grease works great....I prefer the LUCAS Red and Tacky.

many do have your opinion , if it works ignore it. however the manual states these do need lubrication.. so if you wait till it then is an issue that means its worn out.


this takes maybe 10 min the first time you do it.
