Grenaded a rear bearing, bought a press

Went out Sat to go test out my snorkel and do some exploring. About 20min into the trail and I hear a nasty clicking. Got out and looked for what I thought was a stubborn stick, nope. Grabbed the top of the tire and gave it a good shake.....crunch, crunch, crunch:redbrick: After limping it the quick 20mi home I had the axle out in about 15min. But the Hobby Shop on base was already closed so I'd have to wait till Tuesday and try to do it on my lunch. Kinda sick of paying to use their press and driving all the way there and having to work on their schedule.

So I gave in to temptation, drove out to Pensacola Harbor Freight and dropped $200 on a 20ton press. Love it! Had the bearing out in about an hr. Most of that time was spent scrounging around looking for thick enough stock scraps to use.

So after the axle was out, I chose to just grind the bearing retainers off as well as the ABS speed rotor (I hate this ABS and i killed it already). Then I pushed the axle out of the bearing and the bearing out of the bearing case.

All small parts are soaking while the bigger stuff's paint dries.

I've never done them with a press, I just heat the bearing retainers with a torch until they slide off and then you can heat the inner bearing race a little and just hold the backing plate and knock the axle on a piece of wood and they come right apart. I have a length of pipe that I keep around that fits right over the axle and tight to the inner race and retainers and I use it as a slide hammer, works everytime. I did them this way on my 88 PU, 97 Tacoma and 1 side on my 98 4Runner.

Did you replace that ABS tone ring? I left mine off on my 4Runner, no ABS=happier wheeling

All back together and also tightened up the rear brakes and of course a good 4 corner bleed. Feels like a new truck! The ABS gear went right in the trash, I share your opinion of ABS=GARBAGE off road!

Does your abs not disable itself once you get into 4lo? Pretty sure mine does, and it definitely does when I engage the locker.

Either way I'm just waiting for a day I feel bored enough to bother disabling my ABS full time. Too many times this winter I was lining up the best snowbank or pole to stop me from sliding... er "coasting" straight through a busy intersection.

Mine doesn't, I think thats only on the locker equipped trucks.

My ABS hasn't worked since I sank it in the ocean. That soaking also fixed my p0420 code as well, sea foam really works! My ABS would disengage when the locker engaged. The blue wire mod allowed me to engage the locker in any drive also knocked out ABS.
