Grounding second battery question

Hi all, I'm wiring up a dual battery system and have a question on grounding. The factory battery appears to be grounded to the body, the frame, and the block. I can't see the exact location on the block hut I'm assuming it's there cause every vehicle I've worked on does that.

My question is when grounding my second battery, short of running a whole lot of cable to ground it back to the starting battery, I figure I'll replicate the factory side and ground to the body, frame, l and block. There is a convenient location on the block, currently used to support the engine oil dip stick. Does anyone see any problem with grounding to this with a ring terminal? I don't see why it would matter but wanted to ask. Thanks!

I guess that would work, but this is easier to get at.

I just used the existing ground point on the passenger side (left side circled in pic).

(sorry for the blurry pic)

I would ground it at the OEM battery ground point .. both batteries grounded at the same ONE point not two ground points..

this will help reduce any power surges .

Thanks. I went ahead and pulled it, no oil or coolant came out so I think I'm good.

Hi JSparky [OP],

I too have done a little 'Upgraded electrical wiring' on my '12 LE... perhaps this post will assist you with yours:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1733906-post2.html You can just check the photos for 'ligitimate / safe' wire grounding positions; "See below" for the full thread version:

Hope you'll find some portion of this thread helpful! 'Best to you'

Awesome as usual, thanks a bunch. Just need to get some wiring for the switches and I'll be good to go.

anywhere on the body that is substantial (more than just sheet metal) will be sufficient. there are two factory ground points on the inner passenger fender, the one shown above, and another behind the air box. using either one will provide a good ground.

Hey JSparky,

'JUST-A-NOTE': There's no need to add the 140A in-line fuse that you see in my provided photos; this was an experimental cable plot that I had planned to use that proved unnecessary, or even detrimental, so I've since removed that 140A fuse...you won't be needing it! The purpose of my illustration was only to show some really good positions to locate these GND wires for convenience and practicality. 'Best to you' and your electrical endeavors,

rig!

The ground terminal from your auxiliary battery should be directly connected to the ground on the starting battery. The reasoning being that in the event your auxiliary battery discharges, that current will not be able to find its way to any of your factory electronics, potentially causing damage.
