Hey everyone,

Some people here may be familiar with the Airflow Snorkel ( an alternative to the ARB Safari Snorkel). Here's a photo of it installed on jsmarine's rig (Thank you in advance for the use of this photo - inspired me to get my own!).

Anyways, these are usually $290+ shipping, but if we get 10 together who want one, the price drops to $250. These are a great looking alternative to the ARB snorkel which are a bit harder to install and some have had to move their automatic antennas, which you do not have to do with these. They will fit 1996-2002 models and require some basic drilling through the front fender and attach to a bracket that's also included to secure the top of the snorkel to rhe A-pillar. They aren't out of stock, I've talked personally with Kurt there, trying to generate more interest in these (of of the heads of operations) and they are available. That info is a bit misleading. But yeah for $100 less than an ARB that could save you the hassle of dealing with the electric antenna ( I still have mine and love it, wouldn't live without it), this is a great deal. It's built for European market 3rd generations.

do you know if it increases performance any?? im either getting a snorkel or K&N cold air intake. the K&N does a 10 hp increase but with the air in the snorkel having to do a 180* turn i didnt know if they would help on that side of things but the ram air part might help. they cost about the same but the snorkel sure would come in handy when our roads get flooded.
and what do they do if its raining?? wouldnt it suck the rain in?

Snorkels are designed to keep water out. I doubt a rain storm will hydro lock your engine -- these wouldn't be made if they didn't work as designed. As far as a touchless car wash I'm sure you could still go through, just reverse the snorkel top / wash it yourself / or if you still take it to get it washer, go to a brushless one and touch it up when you're done I dunno... Just trying to help people get a good deal on a good product. I'm assuming when I get a list of 10 for sure's they will be sent soon after.

The forward facing scoop on a safari snorkel is designed to shed rain water inside. You are suppose to turn it around in the snow or it'll pack up with snow.

Thor. If you cant decide between a snorkel and cold air intake. Just do the deckplate, ISR, and get a high flow air filter and a snorkel. With the deckplate out you have the effects of a CAI with the air being able to bypass the snorkel. And with the deckplate in, you have a sealed intake with a snorkel. Best of both worlds.

And kelly, keep us updated on this. I may be interested! And did you ever get your ISR figured out?

The forward facing scoop on a safari snorkel is designed to shed rain water inside. You are suppose to turn it around in the snow or it'll pack up with snow.

Same with the Airflow scoops, they also shed water. The scoops are pretty much identical to each other.

Although I don't go through automated car-washes, but enough water forced directly in the scoop with either the AirFlow or ARB and you might have a problem, but rain is NOT an issue; even heavy rain with the scoop facing forward like my photo above.

I can recommend the Airflow, I know I am biased since I own one, but they do fit pretty well along the body, and the air-box connections fit tight too. (most important IMO) They do fit around the stock power antenna and don't require any extra parts from the dealer like the Tacoma intake tube. Also, installation isn't too bad either, just take your time (measure twice or three times, and drill once! it is a big hole in your fender!)

Overall, Its a good quality product, just as good as an ARB IMO, but at a better price. I am a fan of ARB, and I almost bought one but I came across the Airflows, and I am happy with my Airflow snorkel.

I have this setup as well, I keep the deckplate open most of the time, since my 4runner is my daily driver in the city; not much need for a snorkel from my house to work! But on trips off pavement, I close the deckplate, not only for water crossings but also to help keep the filter a little cleaner from dust and dirt.

I haven't had one of these but did have an ARB one on my FJ. Drilled a 4" hole into a 3 month old truck...nice. Anywho, went through carwashes and rain all the time. Did have to turn it around in snow though, the lightweight of the snow just gets sucks into the snorkel. Absolutely loved this mod though.

Sorry guys, the snorkels actually were discontinued, or aren't being shipped to the US anymore. I'll let you know if Kurt ever gets back to me about them.

Sounds like the Safari Snorkel (ARB SS170HF) is the only one now.

These look great indeed, I almost bought one like this one, I think it is for a Hilux but the guy who sold it to me pointed out a couple of things. First is the tube diameter for the snorkel (better breathing for my TC engine) and second is the the fit where it matters, coupling the snorkel to the airbox, all the rest is cosmetic and of course the look is good but you want overall functionality.

This led me to go for the Airflow snorkel model for the Prado 120 which is wider diameter and couples exactly to my 1KZ-TE airbox and should do better for adapting couplings for the v6's and v8's because the fitting pipe is round and not oval.

Another thing i learned is that the model i chose had much better water evacuation properties from the head of the snorkel than the one from the picture, this is because i installed a snorkel as well on my brothers 96 Montero that has the same head and diameter as in the picture and he gets water in the bottom of his filterbox after heavy rain.

Just thought i'd let you guys know some think about because we are limited on info for our runner years, but it does look awesome on your post!!
