Guy is trying to sell me a rusty sport edition.

A guy in the town next to me is trying to get me to buy his 2000 sport edition. It's got 168,000 on the clock and is in decent shape... above the frame rails. This frame is one of the worst I've ever seen in Colorado. He's wanting $2250, but I don't think I'd pay more than $1200. I've attached the pictures he has sent me, sorry they're terrible quality, apparently taking pictures isn't this guys forte. What would you guys pay for something of this nature? My plan if purchased for a decent price would either be frame swap or part out.

Man I don't know if I'd want a sport runner so bad as to take on this project. I don't necessarily agree changing the frame is either cheap or easy - not for me anyway - perhaps you have a garage and the knowledge/skill/tools to do it?

But it's you, so if you can endure such a project I'd offer $800 and maybe slide up to $1250 if you feel the drivetrain is really in good shape.

Otherwise I'd keep looking, plenty of clean southwest runners out there. Unfortunately Texas will add some not so good flooded vehicles soon, so watch out for those. Luck. :cowboy:

Having done a full frame swap to a truck I have owned and loved for 17 years, I would never do it to a new to me truck. (See link in sig.)

I'd buy a different truck.

As someone who has dealt with the rusty trucks of the midwest - having had done a patch or two of weld jobs. THIS TRUCK in particular looks like a massive NO NO - those rust holes are as big as your legs! times 3!
Which just means other things are rusted to $$$hit. DIFFs, brake lines, rocker panels etc etc its rotting from the inside.

Spend your money wisely. Don't buy someone's problems. They hid behind "bad Photography" to avoid giving you a fair idea of the extent of the problem :uzi::behindsofa:

Bro. That frame is SHOT! Seriously? A frame swap isn't like a oil change. If the frame is that bad. And that is BAD. I can't imagine the body being not far behind. Keep searching man.

I feel bad for the guy, but rather than him taking a huge loss why doesnt he replace the frame? Oh, I know why because its a huge pain in the ass and he is trying to pass it off on someone else.

Honestly if they arent willing to take it on and they know the 4runner, why on earth would you think you should buy it and take it on?

Honestly, I WOULD buy it for $900 - patch it - and drive it to the ground as a beater - who cares. might last longer than you think? .. granted as long as it " is safe enough " lol :target:

It might be a candidate donor vehicle for a 4WD swap if you can get it for $750-1,000 and the suspension/drivetrain isn't rotten to hell, but I wouldn't buy it to drive or fix

I was alway told to avoid cars from the south, Texas specifically, due to flooding. If you're gonna look at one from down south, peel up the carpet and be prepared to run

My main plan if I do get the thing will just be to part if out, interior is supposedly in great shape, low miles and a scooped hood:bounce: I'll wait till he gets desperate to sell and see if he'll take $500 or so. I just don't want the truck to go to the crusher.

that's a good plan. you can probably double your money if you get it for $500 and part it out.

I've had a few rusty 4runners before but NOTHING like that. If that was your dream build, low mileage, perfect color, etc. maybe I'd do it but I can't imagine if you pay yourself for time that you'll be much ahead in the end. If it was mostly surface rust and maybe a little hole here or there, a few hours with a grinder and a little bit of welding an dyou'd have a nice truck. This looks way too far gone.

Grew up in California and Texas so no experience with rust. Lived in Illinois for a few years and, oh my the rusty cars. Don't think I would take one on. Rust never sleeps!

I had to look at those crappy pics a few times before I saw that the entire center of the frame forward of the crossmember was rotted through! I say stay away unless you need a motor...

As for staying away from Southern vehicles don't believe everything you hear. You can find rust free rides every day, Houston, NOLA and the 3rd coast are areas to be cautious of flood wise. The rest of the SE is a treasure trove for good 3rd gens at good prices, not west coast prices. Been living in SE 30 yrs have bought several vehicles.

I woudn't touch what your looking at with what is available to me in the SE, not even to part out.
