Yea, the GX drives like a bank vault though, safe, secure, and quiet. They feel different to me as well.

Yea, the GX drives like a bank vault though, safe, secure, and quiet. They feel different to me as well.
I looked at the 2017 GX460. Several downsides for me:
-Rear barn door.
-Rear door opens from the street side.
-Mandatory 3rd row seating takes up cargo space and is relatively useless.
-Rear seats don't lay flat.
-Premium requires 2nd row captains chairs. When pushed down to carry gear, there are big gaps for gear to fall through to the floorboard.
-Towing package is optional.
-Requires premium fuel.
-Full time all wheel drive.
The GX460 is nice and looks like a capable suburban mall runner. Not much for running through the woods and brush loaded with hunters, dogs and gear.

Have had both for awhile now...totally trying to talk my wife into letting me take over the GX and mod...many, many parts underneath are a direct bolt-on. The V8 is a huge difference...have driven both on same roads, same incline, etc... and the V8 cannot be beat - it is not even close. Forget the numbers.
The biggest downside I see if you want to mod is that I would rather go with a super bare-bones GX since you would be throwing all the suspension, airlift, and other useless crap out and that most likely cost $$$ in comparison to a LTD 4x4. Plus you end up with a bunch of blank holes where all the switches go to control the suspension.
Definitely prefer the rear of the T4R, but it's not that bad and I rarely use the rear window...so not a huge issue. A 4x4 modded GX would be really sweet and handle the weight much better then the T4R in my opinion.
But...why not just go for a Landcruiser or LX and get a beefier powertrain?

This. Totally different vehicles.
4Runner=utilitarian
Lexus= lots of froo froo
On a subjective topic, the Lexus, IMO is revolting. Then others would say the same of the current 4Runner

FWIW - I've run GX460 air suspension in my 4runner for about a year. I did not like the ride quality. And I punctured one air bag. I did like them off road. So I have since removed them. But if you want air suspension you can search for my thread. It's pretty easy to do the swap and pretty cheap as well. It's just not very good without significant efforts to go through a shock tuning process (assuming you want better shocks like Fox/King/etc. for playing in the dirt.) The spring rate is extremely progressive so it rides very differently from coil springs. Shock valving then is an issue.
I would love to have a Prado 150. All the good things. And you also get a rear locker, crawl, etc.
Also the claim of thicker sheet metal is wrong I suspect. A GX460 with the 4.0L 1Gr weights exactly the same as a 4runner. I don't believe it has thicker gauge metal unless someone can show me evidence to the contrary.

I have both and both are great vehicles. The 4R LTD reminds me of my wife’s former ’07 sport edition camry (4-banger) in quality, refinement, and power delivery. My GX is much more comparable to my former ’03 4R V8 Sport Edition in quality, refinement, and power delivery. If you had a 4th gen (especially a v8) and went to a 5th gen, then you probably have an idea of what I am referencing. If not, then you are fortunate to think that the 5th is the benchmark of 4Rs. They are 2 very different vehicles. The GX is not just for dbags who valet park and only drink rare wines with their pinkies out just like the 4R is not just for outdoorsmen who drive 99% of the time on treacherous terrain and drink natural light ice.
