I so want to do this, but i have the factory 15's ugh
-wonders if he looks really stupid with that statement- I have to look again, but I'm sure the tires say R15..... or was I stupid by going by what the tire said?

x2... I am not keeping my calipers, but the other guy that did a rear disc conversion here never finished (at least that I remember seeing). He left us only with part 1. I am very interested to see more people do this conversion.

So I just finished my upgrade with Autozone Calipers. A warning to all... check to make sure that the piston boots have the cir clips installed. One of my calipers had 3 installed and the other had none installed. I scavenged them off of the old calipers before installing. Just glad I noticed before any catastrophe occurred. Autozone will be notified when I return the cores.

Great write up and you definately answered all of my questions going in but now I have one new one. I have a 98 4Runner 4X2 with the stock 5 spoke alloy wheels. Am I reading your chart right and they will fit over the Tundra rotors? If not I plan to look at steel aftermarket spoke wheels or finding newer stock 16" steel wheels.

Are you talking about these wheels? These do fit over both 199's and 231's, and these are the "OEM 4-Runner "5-Star" wheels" that I refer to in the wheel list.
If not, post a picture of the wheels you have and we should be able to tell you for sure.

There were no 5 spokes in 98. Those 5 stars didn't come out until 99 and the coke bottle 5's didn't come out until '01. So I have no idea which ones you have.

I have a question. I know it was stated that the FZJ 80 Wheels will NOT fit over 231mm calipers, unless you run at least a 1/4" wheel spacer. My question is will it clear the 231mm brakes with only 1/4", Ive read elsewhere that the 1/4" spacer will clear the 199mm only. Does anyone know if 1/2" will be enough? It seems like a lot of people just go with the 1.25" spacer but I would like to keep them as small as possible. the only reason I want smaller ones is that this is my DD of 60+ miles a day and I dont feel comfortable running the larger spacer.

When I was doing my research for this thread, I remember reading that the 80 Series LC wheels WOULD FIT over 231's with a 1/4" spacer, which is why I listed them as fitting with "at least a 1/4" wheel spacer".
Now, that being said, I cannot find a post/picture/forum member that can verify with photos and/or 100% certainty that his setup will work. Everyone running the 231's w/LC wheels that I can find is using 1.25" spacers.
This question seems to be coming up alot, so maybe I'll just test it out myself. I could pull an 80 series wheel off the '97 and try to install it on the '01 with 1/4" worth of washers on the wheel studs. Then we'll all know for sure.

He's probably referring to the dealer/port installed Enkei's that many ordered on 4Runner's sold in the south(GA, FL, AL, etc.). There was a 5 spoke that looked like the Ford Exploder wheels from that era.
BTW, they're 15's so I highly doubt the larger calipers will clear.

Well I'm doing the brakes this weekend and since I'm waiting to get the wheels powder coated I'll just take the extra wheel and try 1/4" of washers plus whatever extra it takes to clear them. Thanks for the write up btw Ive read it a few times to get ready to start it. Also I didnt know why everyone seemed to just jump to 1.25". I didnt see where anyone tried 1/2" or 3/4". But like BFAD said Ill get washers and find the right one and post back.
Spidertrax spacers are very popular because they are hubcentric, but they only make them in 1.25". That's why everyone seems to jump to 1.25".
Yeah I read that they were probably the best choice to go with. I just wish they had a smaller size, but if a lot of people have them with no problems I will probably also go this route. Probably better anyway since I have plans to go 285's down the road. I checked their website and they were sold out. Any other places to get them from?
