Hard to Kill 3rd Gen 3.4, 5 quarts low on oil

So I bought V6 5 speed 99 4runner cause I puked the auto trans in my other 99 at 330k and it was ready to scrap. The moron ran it down to 1 quart of oil, 5 freaking quarts low, how did this thing not lock up? It was basically running on sludge. I knew the motor was junk and would need a swap. Amazingly enough I was able to run it 30K miles more. At 1st it would burn about a quart every 1K miles, now its burning 1 quart per day on my 1,000 miles per week driving. :p
I'm doing a motor swap this weekend, I found one with 112K miles in a running frame rot scrapper. Will be driving it later on today, I'm on the final connections.
***The 3.4 3rd gen motor is a freaking legend :boxing:

It's been rumored that the 3.4L can actually run on nothing but the shattered dreams and aspirations of former Jeep owners...

Mine is still going strong at 370k. Just dropped about 1200 in repairs to timing belt/waterpump, a/c and 2 new tires. My FIL is going to be driving it for the next year in El Paso. I'm hoping to keep it going for another 100k before needing a new engine. It doesn't burn any oil or coolant and gets 20mpg on the highway.

Good look with the truck man. These things are tanks and can run forever with some repairs every few hundred thousand miles.
 
Sounds good, I'm up in the north east, up here we get a beating from road salt. A lot of good running beasts get scraped for rotted frames. They're still good for parts though.
 
Wow that a lot of oil burning. Oil ring lands clogged up and the rings letting oil slide past would be my diagnosis.

I've once changed the oil in a Honda Civic that when I pulled the drain plug no oil came out. I thought I pulled the wrong bolt at first. Also wasn't making any noise.

Too funny! I drove a jeep for a long time! Blew up right under 200k, and I just bought a 4runner with more miles than it had! 3.4l! Purrs like a kitten!

I have a 2008 Jeep GC with 110k miles on it. Damn thing has blown an alternator and an injector in the last 2 months. Runs kinda rough, I need to check the plugs, betting they're original.

Meanwhile my '02 4Runner with 165k runs smoother and has never left me stranded anywhere. Bought it at 153k and the previous owners obviously did zero maintenance. Been catching up on the basic stuff, while using it as a daily driver.

Anyway, my 3.4 5VZ-FE only takes 5 quarts total when it's bone dry. So, yeah, 5 quarts low means you have no oil. lol
 
I love hearing these stories, they only further cement this motor as a true legend. I am still new to T4R but have always had them close to my heart. I love this vehicle more and more every day, I've had it for about a month now.
